I was fortunate to have learned about the recent reprinting of his 1983 essay on Central Europe and its relevance within the current context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and was able to get a copy. Up to the end I was reading this guy

@testing You are correct about the source of the shared passage. The book I recently purchased has both the essay about Central Europe and his speech so I mixed them up

We had to read Kundera in college and his writing style and subjects lit me up (can’t think of a better term). I’ve always made an effort to read everything he wrote since then, so thank you for the added context

I’ve been spending time working in public libraries with my visiting friend from the Ph so we don’t give in to the urge having a siesta every time we have a meal at my place. The fact that we can walk straight into these beautiful buildings and use all of their resources without needing any documentation pains me when thinking of my home country. Every one should have access to functional public resources like libraries and parks. How many geniuses have been stunted by poverty?

I’m reading a book on the history of Spanish and I shrivel at the thought of it hypothetically retaining the declensions in Latin—a different noun “ending” for both case and number. Spanish verb conjugations are already hell as they are for a learner
