📢 Short announcement for chaos.social users 📢

We just made a minor change to our rules:

The sentence “Provide credit for creative works that are not your own.” was moved from the “Best Practices” section up to the proper rules.

We also expanded it to clarify our stance on AI generated content: “That includes marking AI generated content clearly as such.”

You can always find our full rules at https://meta.chaos.social/rules

@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@ordnung Could you clarify how to handle creative works of unknown origin, like memes for example?

So, if it's called birdfeeding because you're feeding birds, what exactly is breastfeeding then?

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@scy And what is baby oil made of?

the lack of a real ?: operator in Python still bugs me.
"okay" if success else "error"
looks horrible!

I came up with:
{1:"okay", 0:"error"}[success]
which I like marginally better, I guess.

Does anyone know of a nicer way to put this?

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@scy Good point about the non-lazy evaluation.

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@scy
Nice, that's even shorter :-)
Yeah, it is not that bad; more of an annoyance than a problem. Still, having the condition in the middle seems odd to me. Also, it does not scale that well - consider for example
a<min?min:a>max?max:a
vs.
min if a<min else max if a>max else a
But admittedly, one can probably get used to it. 🙂

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@scy Readability depends a lot on what you're used to, I guess. It is sometimes hard to let go of my c(++) upbringing. 🙂
Of course, it was just an example. I usually have a function minmax() for this purpose, if I need it more than once.

@tuxedocomputers Are you planning to offer smaller devices than 14" in the future? In the 10"-14" category on your website there are currently only 14" devices, which seems a bit odd, tbh. :-)

Huh, apparently switched to an open core model a while back, and the good people at CodeBerg e.V. made a fork called . Maybe I should switch?

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@Codeberg I will definitely have a look. What would be the recommended migration path? Is it too late for a drop-in binary replacement? If yes, can I import Gitea repos somehow? (Preserving issues etc)

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@Codeberg If anyone else is wondering: Migration turned out to be super easy. This helps: https://forgejo.org/docs/next/admin/gitea-migration/
On top of that, there is a function for migrating repos from GitHub, GitLab, Gitea and others. 👍

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

People need to read more old books.

This is from one that's near 50 years old and explains succinctly why replacing humans with AI is bullshit--even if the AI can think on the same level as humans (current AIs can't, and will likely never be able to).

(Weizenbaum was a computer science professor at MIT and famously invented the ELIZA bot, so yes, he knows what he's talking about.)

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@thomasfuchs How can choice be anything else but a computation? I think I get your point, but the argument seems to rely on the assumption that humans are somehow non-deterministic, in a good way?

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@thomasfuchs How on earth could you give a human the exact same input twice? You can't rewind a brain to an earlier state, can you?

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Nah, I think I get your point (something along the lines of "it's bad to replace humans with ai for important decisions", and I totally agree, at least for the forseeable future), but I think there are better arguments than "humans are so special that no machine could ever be as good at certain things".

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar
fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@thomasfuchs @x2ero Fist, let me back up for a second, because I feel like I sometimes come across as rude or overly opinionated, which is not my intention. If you are not interested in this particular discussion (since it's not the topic you originally posted about), that's perfectly fine. Just say so, or just don't reply. But if you are: Why do you think we aren't deterministic?

fnord,
@fnord@chaos.social avatar

@thomasfuchs @x2ero I'm not sure about the pointlessness (on a global scale, sure, but on a personal one, maybe not), but that would not affect if determinism is true, at least not without an argument why everything being pointless could not be possible, right?
Regarding quantum effects: I agree, there probably is something like true randomness which could affect brains (and maybe computers too?). Would it be appropriate to call that partially random input to an otherwise deterministic system?

The Mirror Cube is delightfully evil, because it totally fucks up my muscle memory, forcing me to know what I'm doing. Back to re-learning some algorithms, I guess. 😀

@sirjofri Oh, I never tried that. Sounds like an interesting challenge!
