I learned some days ago how gets trapped inside enclosures used for when exposed to daily cycles of heat and cold.

The cold creates lower pressure inside. If that overpowers the seals, then outside air gets sucked in, carrying moisture. This extra moisture can condense inside and accumulate at the bottom.

In the next warm part of the cycle, if some air is expelled because of the higher pressure, that moisture is not carried out because it is in a liquid state.🧵

Repeat this a lot of times, and you will get the electronic circuit diving inside the enclosure 😂

I want to measure how the humidity and pressure fluctuate inside an enclosure that I'm prototyping for an industrial composting temperature sensor, so I assembled a quick hack with an Adafruit ESP32 Feather V2 running SensorWatcher that will report that every 10 minutes. The sensors are an HTU31D for humidity and a BMP388 for pressure.🧵

Finally, I have the first complete working prototype of the temperature sensor for large-scale composting I was working on 🥳

The circuit uses the Xiao ESP32S3 board with a DS18B20 temperature sensor probe and three NiMH low-self-discharge cells.

The sealed enclosure is made with standard heat fusion water pipes of 1/2" and 1" diameter.

The measurements are sent over HTTP to a backend once per hour, with an expected battery life of 1 to 2 years.

Ok, sorry another n00b question again.
What's the downside of using huge numbers for my resistors in a voltage divider. I can't see any. Even based on price of the components.
There appear to be a lot of upsides for a battery operated device.

@ScaredyCat Maybe it will depend on how much current you need to get from the middle point? Bigger resistors will make it easier for the voltage at the middle point to deviate from the ideal value when you put a load on it.

@ScaredyCat I haven't done any low-power design yet, but I have seen some tricks being used for such cases, like using a FET to disable the divider when the micro is sleeping or even using a GPIO pin as a current sink for the divider that is put in high-impedance mode when sleeping.

Today I'm going down the rabbit hole of DS18B20 chip fakes 🤨.

A quick test of a batch of fakes I bought here in Argentina (because those seem to be the only ones you can buy on the local market) revealed that they measure about -2 C with respect to a real Maxim DS18B20. What a 💩.

I trust the Maxim one because it is within 0.2 C of some Sensirion sensors I have here.

So, I searched on DigiKey for real DS18B20s to include on my next order... and what a surprise!

Almost all variants of the Maxim DS18B20 are out of stock (as expected), but they are now selling those chinese clones at almost the same price as the authentic ones! 🤦‍♂️
