Went to a pub in London yesterday. Ordered a specific gin for a G&T - they'd run out.
"Oh well, any other gin is fine," I said.
"No, sorry. We've run out of all our gin."

WTAF?! How does a pub run out of all its gin?

So I ordered a Monkey Shoulder instead. Barman said he'd bring it to my table.

He turned up with… A tumbler of Monkey 47 gin!

I'll be honest, not the best bar experience I've had.

geekygirldawn,

@Edent At least Monkey 47 is delicious gin :)

Naming is hard. I kicked off some discussions because I think we need to rename the CHAOSS Bus Factor metric to something less macabre. People seem to agree that we should rename it, but wow is there little to no consensus about what we should call it! What have I gotten myself into? I know better than to get involved in naming things 🤣 🤪

geekygirldawn,

@luis_in_brief @expoliticaljunkie But in the context of open source projects, I don't think "Boss Factor" applies as well as it does in software dev teams within orgs.

geekygirldawn,

@luis_in_brief @expoliticaljunkie Changes at work may be the main reason, but it's not the only reason.
We're actually leaning toward something more descriptive and inclusive, like Key Contributor Count.

geekygirldawn,

@luis_in_brief I agree with your frustration about people disconnecting finances from maintainer health. Also, as someone who recently and very suddenly lost a key maintainer in a car accident, I also have lots of feels about this topic and know first hand how disruptive this can be, regardless of the reason.

I’ve enjoyed the travel, but it’s great to be home! We’ve made some of my favorite homemade meals this week: Korean spicy rice with Kim chi, pizza with Paul’s homemade crust and cashew cheese, and courgetti spaghetti (aka zoodles) with pesto and garlic bread. It was all delicious!

Vegan pizza with a sourdough crust, dollops of cashew cheese, basil, sundried tomatoes, olives, artichokes, and pine nuts
Ciabatta roll garlic bread and courgette / zucchini noodles with sundried tomatoes, olives, and pesto on a white plate.

Taken literally, a manager saying one of their reports generally "wildly exceeded expectations" for any annual performance review but the first, is a self-own.

You worked with that person for a year. If you don't know what they're capable of after that, you shouldn't be managing that person. Or, perhaps, any person.

(Yes, I know, the words in performance reviews don't mean anything, which is why it's so important to kerburgle the fluffication with carflivorous stromblevency.)

geekygirldawn,

@xahteiwi I wouldn’t necessarily interpret that as exceeding my expectation of them as their manager. In big companies with career levels, wildly exceeding expectations usually means that person is exceeding the documented expectations for the job level that person is in and is justification for a promotion, which are only typically allowed during the performance review season.

geekygirldawn,

@xahteiwi I’ve managed a lot of early career women who were hired into job levels that were below their capabilities for HR “reasons”. This is how I get them promoted and compensated fairly for the work they have been doing.

Today, my UK Indefinite Leave to Remain application was approved!! 🎉 This is like a US green card and means that I can live in the UK permanently / forever!! It’s such a relief to finally have it! We’re celebrating with some bubbly and leftover homemade shakshuka from last night 😁🥳

Mom has quite the collection of vintage open source / Linux conference swag, including this one in questionable taste from SCO. It was from Linux World - I’m guessing it’s from 2001 or 2002 before SCO vs. IBM.

Me: “I’ll just nip out in the dark and empty the overflowing recycling from the kitchen into the outside recycling bin”

Also me: *Grabs giant slug on the handle of the lid and squeals like a child”

The recycling was immediately delegated to Paul and even after washing my hands a bajillion times, I’m still not quite convinced that I’ve washed all of the slug slime off.

I am beyond thrilled to win the OpenUK individual award. I moved to the UK in January 2015, and it means so much to me to be accepted and appreciated for the work that I’ve done here in my new home within the local open source community 💖💖🥂🎉

Relaxing at home with a Manhattan after spending the week in a UK forest cabin with friends. We mostly ate too much, drank wine, and played board games, but we did venture out to Chester, a city surrounded by Roman walls. Tomorrow, I fly to Chicago for KubeCon, Cloud Native Rejekts, and OSPOlogy Live. Including the trip to Chicago, I have only 3 nights at home over 3 weeks of travel. It’s worth it, but oof!

geekygirldawn,

@krisfreedain I hope you’re enjoying your trip to Latvia - it looks like a great time! I finally got to meet Charlotte Henkle at LF Member Summit!
