Basketball statistician, scuba diver, amateur chef, motorcyclist, language nerd, computer toucher, happy snapper, pretengineer. I am like if James Bond was unattractive, uncharismatic and not misogynistic.

Catholic (religious), cataholic (really into my cat)

The Fediverse's control cis guy. Like that exactly-a-kilogram they keep under a glass hood in France.

I got this and put a slather of it on my chicken burger before putting down the top bun half. It contains fried shallots, bits of roasted peanut, sesame seeds, oil, and whatever the fuck is in 12-gauge RIP (round irritant, personnel) rounds. I bit into the burger and immediately started sweating. I now have hiccups, tears are streaming down my face and my moustache is elephant repellent.

An open source Windows-compatible OS can’t be far off. Microsoft doesn’t seem to realise that it you have that market share and that attitude to your users something’s got to give.

There is a server on my home network called "trucky." I can ssh to it using my common "shit inside my home" credentials, it says it's connected via ethernet but I don't know which switch. It has 500G of disk space, 16GB of RAM, it's a bare bones Debian install, and my home directory just contains a copy of the GitHub cli. I do not know where this is. I cannot locate it.

Hobby electronics is 80% dealing with the fact everything expects 5v and 5v batteries aren't really a thing, and 20% being told on forums that your question is wrong.

This week is a cluster-fuck of computer touching so I am taking an afternoon tea break to plan a bushwalk on the weekend. Reject modernity, embrace trees and rocks.

    The primary reason the "Australian tech sector" is whining about the proposed merger laws, is it would require that sector to start businesses with the intent to produce goods and services that people buy, generating revenue in excess of expenses, which would equate to profit.

    "Hang on Geordie that's how business works" I hear you say.

    Sweet summer child.

    Enormous swathes of the Australian start-up sector has no real interest in long term profitability through the legacy "making shit and selling it to people that want to buy it" method. The idea is to get a group of people to make a product and show that they can make a good product, then rather than deal with the machinations of getting them to buy it, handling support of it, producing new versions, features, etc. you instead toss your hair provocatively at a large tech company or established sector for acquisition.

    geordie,
    @geordie@aus.social avatar

    Probably the starkest example of this was the "neobank" thing in the 2010s. Up, Volt, Xinja etc. all had no interest in acquiring an FSI license and become an ADI, they wanted to get bought by a big bank, the founder becomes like "head of digital" or whatever, and the startup leadership get rich, then they leave.

    This was so obvious and so sucky, that at an event about digital banking the founder of 86400 got asked directly if that's what they were doing and his response was "What? No! Ha ha! We are a strategic bank thing!" and then sold it to NAB the following month.

    geordie,
    @geordie@aus.social avatar

    So it's Not a Good Thing for Australian business to only ever try a little bit to show a flash of innovation and then get acquired in what amounts to really just a job interview for the founder to get given a department and budget in a very low competition market sector dominated by giant companies. So the acquisition thing would put the brakes on that. People who would very much like to start a 15 person company that sells itself and its intellectual property to Qantas or Westpac or Transurban after two years, don't think this is AT ALL a good thing.
