Ich glaube, ich möchte ein Rose Bike kaufen 🫣

@janl @cjk Ich fahre ne GRX600 1x11 an meinem Gravel-Bike.

@gerotakke@social.bitwig.community avatar

gerotakke,
@gerotakke@social.bitwig.community avatar

macOS 14.4.1 addresses pro apps not starting because of certain audio units. Gave Final Cut a try again. Still not starting. It's been roughly one and a half years. Slow clap yet again 👏

Strong CSS opinion: the “root” part of rem should respect the shadow DOM root or at least there should be another unit that can respect shadow DOM or containers as root elements.

Hey Masto, I'm looking for new projects again!
Freelance web dev in FFM/DE with > 25 years of experience, mostly working for digital agencies and close to design/UX. Full stack to a fault.
I would love to do something a little bit different. I'm not afraid of dirty work or things that other people might call “legacy projects”.
Boosts welcome. Thanks!

EU should ban algorithmic feed and comment sorting by law.

gerotakke,
@gerotakke@social.bitwig.community avatar

@polarity Maybe. But if there are algorithms for big platforms, they need to be open source and 100% understood. They should not hold the kind of power they do while being totally concealed and at the mercy of a small number of individuals.

I just noticed that at least 4 posts about people liking the small/old/indie web I just read came through people I have met through completely different circumstances.
Not just one bubble.
That is giving me hope.

I’m casually in the market for a set of ebikes. I’m very likely fine with secondhand ones, and I have some variability with what I’m looking for. I know my way around regular bikes, but I wouldn’t know where to start learning about the ins ans outs of ebikes. hHow do I fill this gap so I can make an informed purchase decision? Comparative tests by reputable sources have not really helped me.

I’m not looking for specific bike recc’s, I just want to learn what’s important to look out for.

gerotakke,
@gerotakke@social.bitwig.community avatar

@janl There's a lot to talk about.
All the “acoustic bike” checks still apply. I would stay away from marketing focused brands that do not use or advertise regular bike components (like VanMoof, Sushi, Cowboy).
Battery health is a factor but batteries can be replaced (expensive). Motors are a black box, you can't fix anything. Can't even really replace it. Everything about motors changes every other year and there's no compatibility. It's bad.
What I found to be really important is the …

gerotakke,
@gerotakke@social.bitwig.community avatar

@janl … responsiveness of the motor, so how long it takes from the point you push the pedal until the motor kicks in.
Gears are less important with a motor if you don't plan on riding w/o it. Brakes are more important.
Also big factor if you can easily remove the battery and take it inside, depending on your circumstances.

gerotakke,
@gerotakke@social.bitwig.community avatar

@janl I'm not sure how I feel about second hand bikes because of the non-servicable motors. For pricing I would take the price of an “acoustic bike” and add 1500€ to get a feel of the bang for buck situation.

Overall I can't overstate how happy I am with e-bikes as a means of transportation. Very much changed my life and I wish they would become even more popuplar and supported by infrastructure. They're my primary mode of transportation since 2017 and I sold my car in 2021.

gerotakke,
@gerotakke@social.bitwig.community avatar

@janl I read the post and all the replies and I'm happy there's so much overlap and consent!
Wrt hub motors: I don't think it's about physics but rather the situation on the market. I'm keen to try a premium “superlight” e-bike with a Mahle rear wheel motor and compare it to the mid-drive ones. I can imagine that they're just as good now, just that the Mahle motors are aimed at different types of bikes.
Less power, less weight.

gerotakke,
@gerotakke@social.bitwig.community avatar

@janl Oh, another caveat that might be worth mentioning in the post: Things might be very different in other countries with different laws. Throttle triggers for example aren't allowed in Germany and I could see that having a big impact in places where you can use them. Also I think higher speed motors tend to be rear hub instead of mid-drive (see all the Stromer bikes).
Sorry for my rambling, I'm just passionate about this :D
