It is my firm opinion that Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure is a nearly perfect pop song. Hardly an ounce of fat on it. It tells a story, delivers a hooky chorus, has a middle 8, and fair whizzes along in - done in 2 and a half minutes. Just brilliant.

I’m off work next week and planning to read some Ursula K Le Guin, whose works I’ve unconscionably omitted from my reading until being obliquely recommended “Vaster Than Empires And More Slow” recently. Having done that, where should I start?

20 Years Of Dischord 1980-2000

For my tastes (which are admittedly not for everyone) this is one of those albums which brilliantly encapsulates the development of a significant portion of American DIY music. Sobering that this 20 year retrospective is now 23 years old.

It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to it, but Clear by Bomb The Bass stands up supremely well. Not only for Bug Powder Dust (which absolutely SLAPPPPS!) but the rest as well…

Currently obsessed with Mudhoney. Many may write them off as "grunge also-rans". Not only was the term 'grunge' coined to describe their sound, but it's not the overdriven DS-1 sound of their more famous peers. It's 60s style germanium fuzz. They were the first grunge band to break the UK, the band's singer, Mark Arm, packages and ships their records himself and--for my money--their post grunge era records are their best. Oh! And they have lyrics about shithead antivaxxers.

@heydon Documentary called “I’m Now: The Story Of Mudhoney”.

@heydon Yeah. Mudhoney were / are grunge, as far as I was concerned. Listen fairly frequently to Superfuzz Bigmuff, and boy does it stand up well. There’s a documentary about them, and they are just properly good people.

@heydon Just banged on their latest album while gardening. Ooof. Good stuff! Was vaguely aware of it coming out and people saying good things about it, but that was up there energy-wise with their early stuff! Thx for rec!

Incredibly saddened to hear about Steve Albini’s death. Uncompromising and inspirational.

Having set up a few guitars in my time, I have to say this is the first time I’ve tackled setting the action (aka string height) on an acoustic guitar. Quite daunting, given sandpaper is involved. Plays much better now!

I’m off to Halifax Digital Festval today. It’s a 3-day festival: this is day 2. The theme for the day is GenAI and Data. I’m mainly here to make up the data part! I have a short pitch later on, but interested to hear what the day brings.

Couple of thought-provoking talks about GenAI. Particularly liked this on-brand Dall-E image of a terminator getting a degree.

Must come up with a better stand for Alice Coltrane. This essential oil bottle is a bit undignified.

Been tinkering about with rsync to automatically publish static sites. Found out some useful stuff after much trawling of Stack Overflow et al, so thought I’d write it up. I’m sure that future me will find this useful.

London-adjacent Masto-friends with a penchant for music on the heavier end: The Armed play at Outernet on 12th June this year. Should be good. I’m going to be at the Leeds show the day before.

Rewriting the @manyfold storage engine underneath a load of running instances full of data is one of those scary things that's making me procrastinate rather a lot. But, once it's done, we'll get cloud storage support, which will be important for public instances.

Just downloaded the Tusks app created by @bardi. I’m planning to use this for public journalling, mainly about stuff that I’m working on. Apologies in advance for the sudden increase in questionable value content. I suspect it’ll last a week and then normal service will be resumed. First impressions of the app are good. Reminds me of Birdhouse. Really nice to be able to see only my posts, and focus on writing, rather than responding
