I’m off to Halifax Digital Festval today. It’s a 3-day festival: this is day 2. The theme for the day is GenAI and Data. I’m mainly here to make up the data part! I have a short pitch later on, but interested to hear what the day brings.

Having set up a few guitars in my time, I have to say this is the first time I’ve tackled setting the action (aka string height) on an acoustic guitar. Quite daunting, given sandpaper is involved. Plays much better now!

Been tinkering about with rsync to automatically publish static sites. Found out some useful stuff after much trawling of Stack Overflow et al, so thought I’d write it up. I’m sure that future me will find this useful.

Incredibly saddened to hear about Steve Albini’s death. Uncompromising and inspirational.

Just downloaded the Tusks app created by @bardi. I’m planning to use this for public journalling, mainly about stuff that I’m working on. Apologies in advance for the sudden increase in questionable value content. I suspect it’ll last a week and then normal service will be resumed. First impressions of the app are good. Reminds me of Birdhouse. Really nice to be able to see only my posts, and focus on writing, rather than responding

Must come up with a better stand for Alice Coltrane. This essential oil bottle is a bit undignified.

I’m off work next week and planning to read some Ursula K Le Guin, whose works I’ve unconscionably omitted from my reading until being obliquely recommended “Vaster Than Empires And More Slow” recently. Having done that, where should I start?

London-adjacent Masto-friends with a penchant for music on the heavier end: The Armed play at Outernet on 12th June this year. Should be good. I’m going to be at the Leeds show the day before.

It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to it, but Clear by Bomb The Bass stands up supremely well. Not only for Bug Powder Dust (which absolutely SLAPPPPS!) but the rest as well…

20 Years Of Dischord 1980-2000

For my tastes (which are admittedly not for everyone) this is one of those albums which brilliantly encapsulates the development of a significant portion of American DIY music. Sobering that this 20 year retrospective is now 23 years old.

By the thirteenth day of Christmas, my true love had given to me:

  • 12 partridges in pear trees
  • 22 turtle doves
  • 30 French hens
  • 36 calling birds
  • 40 gold rings
  • 42 geese a-laying
  • 42 swans a-swimming
  • 40 maids a-milking
  • 36 ladies dancing
  • 30 lords a-leaping
  • 22 pipers piping
  • 12 drummers drumming

Honestly I’m not entirely sure what to do with them all.

@Floppy My cursory research turned up nothing but a reference to ring necked pheasants as the 5 gold rings. Sure I read something on here recently that gave a 100% bird interpretation (barring pear tree). I did, however, learn about the Christmas Price Index https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Price_Index

I was part of an amazing thing recently: the Take It To The Bridge pop choir. 80-something people singing pop classics. We rehearse for 13 weeks then put on one show. Thankfully it was captured and is now available for posterity. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3VYoklWDakBRj-n8u4l2PzWlcERFd8Wu

It is my firm opinion that Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure is a nearly perfect pop song. Hardly an ounce of fat on it. It tells a story, delivers a hooky chorus, has a middle 8, and fair whizzes along in - done in 2 and a half minutes. Just brilliant.
