La tradition météorologique du Festival de Cannes a été bien respectée aujourd'hui : moche le matin, grand soleil ensuite, grosse pluie soudaine en milieu d’après-midi, et à nouveau beau temps 😂.

One of our AirTags has survived 2 consecutive cycles in the clothes washing machine 😮.

My pressure washer finally arrived and I am SO excited. I am also deeply annoyed that I told a friend my plans for the weekend are to power wash my deck, and I said it with the anticipation and enthusiasm I used to save for telling friends about things like upcoming booze cruises or trips to Vegas.👵🏻.

@superbetsy I disagree with the illustrating emoji of an old woman. Playing with water is definitely a child thing, and pressure washers are just super-soakers for grown-ups.

In my ongoing quest for a suitable replacement for Lightroom, this is so far the best (at least most promising) candidate : https://www.gentlemencoders.com/nitro-for-macos/

glaurent,
@glaurent@mastodon.social avatar

@patrick_h_lauke I tried it too a few years ago, and gave up. The UI is abysmally bad, which is saying something compared to Lightroom. I still mourn Aperture and wish Apple would resurrect it, it had by far the best UI I’ve seen so far.

glaurent,
@glaurent@mastodon.social avatar

@patrick_h_lauke I had a really hard time with it, but what made me throw it away was that when I tried to crop a picture, it wouldn't let me select up to the edges of the picture. After a long search I discovered that it was because it had lens aberration correction enabled by default (and no hint of that, of course). They clearly gave no thought at all about UX.

Primatologist Frans de Waal has passed away and the world is much poorer from it 😔 . You may have seen that video of a capuchin monkey upset about not being rewarded at the same level as his neighbor for the same task, that was part of his Ted talk : https://www.ted.com/talks/frans_de_waal_moral_behavior_in_animals

Any tips on UI-testing an app that relies on the device's camera (like a video call app) ? Given that the simulator doesn't have any video capability, is that possible ? Has anyone abstracted away the camera to replace it with a random video clip or something ?

The vision hardware looks lovely, but I am more impressed by the depth of the user experience, the guidance to developers, the design system, the operating system and the tooling to support it.

Previous headsets have been cool and exciting (I own pretty much one of each), yet none got this level of necessary scaffolding in place, so the experiences are a mish-mash of half baked ideas.

We finally go from “this is a neat idea” to a viable platform.

glaurent,
@glaurent@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza I did just that a few weeks ago. I concur, it's very interesting and absolutely worth your time.

Folks, what was that one chair that all programmers have in their home office? 🤔

glaurent,
@glaurent@mastodon.social avatar

@MuseumShuffle @icanzilb it is indeed expensive, but consider how much time you'll be spending on it. I bought my Aeron more than 20 years ago, and except for a couple of parts that needed replacement over the years, it's still good as new.

glaurent,
@glaurent@mastodon.social avatar

@icanzilb @MuseumShuffle that said, Herman Miller has released other models, some cheaper, which you may find more comfortable, and they are not the only brand around either. I just wanted to express that purchasing an expensive office chair is a worthwhile investment : it will last for decades and help your spine. But on that last part, daily abs/core and hips/legs/back flexibility exercises will help a whole lot more.

A while ago I came across an app that would let you display Xcode's console output in a nice graphical way, it was using regexps to fetch relevant data and that would let you follow things like a view coordinates for instance, on a panel view. Can't find it anymore, as I don't recall it's name. Any clues anyone ?

glaurent,
@glaurent@mastodon.social avatar

@icanzilb that was your app actually, DataTile, now apparently renamed to dataFude ? But it's not available on the French Mac App Store ?

glaurent,
@glaurent@mastodon.social avatar

@icanzilb I understand, I guess these are somehow complicated times for you. I hope I’ll be able to use it soon :-).

As a designer, xScope has always held a special place in my heart. The app turns 20(!!) today and we're offering a special 60% discount to help celebrate.

https://blog.iconfactory.com/2023/11/happy-anniversary-xscope/

The app has changed much since it was released, I especially love these unused app icon concepts from version 2. Check out those LEDs on the cross braces! 😎

Read about how xScope came to be and then help us spread the word. I want to work on xScope 5, and with your support that just may happen. Thx everyone! 👍

Channeling my days programming in BASIC for the Z-Index values in my custom mapping system. It took me a long time to realize that BASIC line numbers didn't have to be multiples of ten and that convention was used so that you could subsequently insert lines if you needed to.

glaurent,
@glaurent@mastodon.social avatar

@_Davidsmith aahhh, those "renumber" utilities on Apple ][ 👴. Then when I first saw a language without line numbers (I think it was Pascal), I couldn't understand how it worked.
