Know someone who is into model railways?
Idea for souvenir when you visit a country: get them a model of the trains typical for the country you visit.
I got a Shinkansen train for my dad as Christmas present, from a "hobby off" store, they have used goods.
The store also offered equipment to test it before purchasing - that's when I learned that not every of the 4 wagons has a motor.
Thanks to @AsahiLinux , I can now run the Fedora remix on my employer supplied MacBook pro 2023 M2, the model is supported since last week.
Works nicely! Fantastic runtime on a single battery charge!
Disk encryption is not yet in the installer. You boot from usb, then encrypt - memories of #sun days and Veritas disk encapsulation coming up. #sway works great, also wlan, ethernet via dock, bluetooth. Speaker is not yet supported, but sound via bluetooth.
Exchanged business cards with a scientist yesterday, a physicist working on quantum computing at Riken.
He was not aware of PGP and asked me about my key fingerprint on the card.
Come to think about it.. if his research comes forward and quantum computing gets widely available, we will have to abandon these keys and think of something new :)
If you can speak/write a bit Japanese, this is a very nice small game.
Communication is via text files: the player downloads and uploads small text files. https://unityroom.com/games/e999
Want to take a guess why this Japanese sweet is shaped like this?

Hints: related to space flight, and sold since 1969.

It's designed after the Apollo command module, first aircraft to successfully land on the moon. Production since '69 is quite something.. and it's delicious!
"Japan Goes All In: Copyright Doesn’t Apply To AI Training"
Interesting.. so I think with this, fans will train the AI with their most loved movies, give the AI an outline of a story and then have it render new content.
Which things do you think will be possible with this?
With renewal of my apartment contract coming up in November, I have to pay the real estate company a full monthly rent (830EUR) for the renewal.. Together with some other factors like traffic noise in front of the current room, I'm considering to move. But then, moving comes with having to look for a guarantor for the flat again, reregistering utilities etc., and maybe discovering flaws on the new room which you did not consider and are even worse than what annoys you about the current room.
A walk through my new neighbourhood. First time I saw ginger bread in Japan! Imported from Europe and pricey, will hold back until next month when I'm over there and get it directly..
I spent some hours at "Makuhari", an IBM facility near Tokyo. We were invited to see z-series mainframe hardware (not pictures allowed though..), and then hear details.
punch-card readers and also other hardware was around.
One of the colleagues confirmed upfront that there was no dress code - so I came with my SUN microsystems shirt.
Other holiday project: deploying ZigBee2usb bridge and 5 tempeature sensors. Works nicely connected to a Raspi4.
TIL:
while ZigBee devices can do mesh networking to extend range, but not all ZigBee devices can work as 'router'. The sensors I got can not.. smart bulbs or smart plugs can work as router.
ZigBee devices have more or less the same range as wlan devices.. without the mesh functionality.
Funny enough, c't just today also has an article on this setup. https://fluxcoil.net/wiki/snippets/zigbee
I'm using German trains again after quite some time.
130EUR for ~5h trip is quite something..
They started now to offer media streaming on the ICE, their high speed trains. Contract with paramount, and some block busters on offer for streaming on the train. Plays with stock Firefox on Fedora.
@tagomago@tsturm Yes! I think I saw 2 occurrences of this also here in front of my rented room. Company paying for fuel apparently.. on top of the environmental impact it's also louder than aircons, plus the car's machine is spinning up and down in cycles.
Remembering that video about the tiny shop in Akihabara, where the owner had to close?
It got carefully dismantled and assembled in a different place.
