Random question, but does anyone get that bug in Safari on Mac where when navigating the YouTube website, sometimes you'll navigate back a page and the page won't actually change at all despite the URL updating?

@christianselig yup, frequently!

Release Radar!

This is from a period where Roderick had songs that might change in pretty interesting ways between conception and release.

And I love each of the (maybe three?) versions of this one I’ve heard.

@hotdogsladies my Very Special Lady Friend named her band A New Craze after this song and they do a pretty killer cover of it! https://youtu.be/beml6pRJxVU?si=vAZcC_4CPwjz3eyo

Getting everything set up for tonight’s big lamp shade test.

(Only in this exclusive behind-the-scenes footage will I cop to Sony advertising levels of cable concealment fraud.)

Ca. 1994, there was an older fella in the Tallahassee Mac user group who could be a good resource for troubleshooting newbie problems that weren't tackled by the BBS.

He was nice enough, but he was definitely a weird, crotchety old guy.

Point is, at meetings, he would often make a rather belligerent point of reminding everyone to never call him before noon.

Because "that's when I do my downloading."

I still think about this, and it's a phrase I often consider adding to my own vernacular.

gnb,
@gnb@mastodon.social avatar

@hotdogsladies I also do my downloading before noon, typically after the first cup of coffee

The ferry--1km away from our house--is VERY ANGRY AT BOATS right now.

So much honking. And it's foggy, so also regular honking.

Mostly it's the water taxi, but so many people think the ferry is predictable and race in front of it. One time I saw it brake HARD, barely missing a powerboat whose captain was totally oblivious.

Sweet merciful Poseidon people, don't play chicken with a 1500tn boat maybe??

For non-sailors: one honk means "hey," five fast honks means: "get out of the way, asshole."

In my last video, I probably should have included an image of what "in conduit" means. So here's the outlet in my kitchen island, and what's inside the cabinet.

All electrical work around Chicago is done like this even in residential construction. Armored cabling is sometimes allowed and is much easier for a DIYer. I've worked with it before, though, and it still sucks compared to Romex!

A view from inside the cabinet where a metal pipe is coming up through the floor and bending to meet a metal electrical box. Wires run within the pipe to the box and then the receptacle

gnb,
@gnb@mastodon.social avatar

@TechConnectify that still doesn't explain the obsession with horizontal orientation, though; those boxes have knockouts on every plane so they could easily be orientated in “portrait”

I’m gonna launch a few items of merch next year. They’re very cool and will appeal to a much wider reach than the “Snazzy Labs YouTube audience” so I want to sell them under a separate brand. But what on earth do I name the site/company/etc.? Names are hard…

gnb,
@gnb@mastodon.social avatar

@snazzyq Copland with the six colour treatment could have potential trademark issues?

gnb, to random
@gnb@mastodon.social avatar

@ivory no idea if there's anything you can do about this, but if someone uses a hashgag in a content warning, a mute filter for that same hashtag doesn't get applied

@ivory when I relaunch Ivory on Mac after a few days (e.g. on my work machine after the weekend), it takes several refreshes for it to catch up to my last-read position. In other words, I have to hit refresh, scroll to top, and repeat until I get to where I last was on my phone or other device.

Do you wear your Apple Watch when you shower/bathe?

gnb,
@gnb@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm no; that’s prime charging time, and soap/shampoo is apparently bad for the seals

Apple says not to shower or bathe with it: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT205000#:~:text=The%20following%20can%20affect%20the,example%2C%20while%20showering%20or%20bathing)

This isn't just Drobo filling for bankruptcy, the parent company also owns the backup utility Retrospect. Who still uses that, you might ask? Well, me for one…

@jamesthomson there's you, and this one fellow in the ArsTechnica Mac forum who's been maintaining a thread for seven years about Retrospect. It’s… an interesting read. He's forbidden from mentioning the name Retrospect anywhere else other than his one thread. https://arstechnica.com/civis/threads/retrospect-13-a-choice-for-backup-of-multiple-drives-to-offsite-rotation-or-cloud.1306619/

Having poked around at passkeys, I guess I can buy that they’re more good than bad.

Except for: Passkeys need Bluetooth to work, to work. Maybe I’m just weird but my experience is that Bluetooth often just doesn’t work. So… worried.

gnb,
@gnb@mastodon.social avatar

@timbray That's not quite accurate. Passkeys don't require bluetooth to work. What does require BT is signing in on a different device other than the one that contains your key (e.g. if I sit down at your computer and want to use the passkey stored on my phone).
