I've (mostly) moved to my standalone @gotosocial server at @kelson

Unfortunately follower migration doesn't seem to have finished. I'll try again after the 30-day cooldown period.

If you want to see what I'm up to these days, feel free to jump over and follow my new account sooner!

Finally consolidated my notes on things I've done to get the working (mostly) the way I want it to. Some gathered from the forums, some that I noticed and/or figured out myself.

@dtgeek I don't buy many these days - just the ones I plan on rewatching. Last one I bought at Best Buy (just before they stopped carrying them), and a couple of days ago I preordered Lower Decks S4 from Target.

Continuing the Mad Men approach to ecological space colonization, this sequel explores the growing pains of a company town becoming a democracy, a corporation losing its monopoly, and two species of people figuring out how to live together.

Trunks Acquired, to Focus on Swimwear

We're thrilled to announce that Trunks has been acquired by a SPAC in a merger! The combined entity will be listed on NASDAQ under the ticker TRNK.

While we thank the app's creator for their vision, Trunks will pivot to focus on the growing swimwear market. This aligns with our strategic vision and market trends.

We're excited for this new chapter and look forward to bringing Trunks to a wider audience. Stay tuned for further updates!

It's very interesting to be a mod online, the pattern with bad people is basically always:

  1. Person says something bad
  2. Mod tells person to not do that
  3. Person says mod is wrong
  4. Mod gives person timeout
  5. Person messages mod and insist they're innocent
  6. Person gets back from timeout and says they will leave the community because mods are bad and calls mods names
  7. Mod bans person for calling mods names
  8. Person messages mod with ad hominems and blames them and other people
KelsonV,
@KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

@thomasfuchs And they never seem to admit it was their behavior at fault. They'll always insist that it was some opinion of theirs that the mod is punishing them for, or that the mod just doesn't like them.

Same thing, whether it's something as consequential as which political party they vote for more often, or trivial like which version of a superhero is their favorite.

After reading the review of the Onyx BOOX Poke3 by @KelsonV I had a look at the BOOX range and ordered the BOOX Page. Here it is, on the right, next to my Kobo Clara HD.

So far, it has been good. I've installed the Android versions of Libby, Pocket and, yes, Firefox and they work fine. I've adjusted the E Ink refresh rates and button settings for the apps to work correctly.

Now on to more reading. 🙂

KelsonV,
@KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

@sohkamyung Very cool! The Page is a bit wider than I expected from the photos on the website, but it's good to know these apps run well on it.

So you can map the buttons for each app? That's good. One of the things I'd wondered about is whether they'd work with Libby and so on.

New post: Using Thunderbird to Move Email to a New Account

Thunderbird can move messages from one IMAP account to another. Just drag and drop! But Gmail makes it a bit more complicated.

I've been using the Poke3 as my main ebook reader for a couple of years now, mainly because it's a convenient size, has a clear e-ink display, and can run the Android app for any eBook store. I just wish the touch screen was a bit more responsive.

https://hyperborea.org/reviews/products/onyx-boox/

There is a newer model -- and another similar-sized reader that's added back physical page-flip buttons -- but it still feels too early to replace the one I have.

KelsonV,
@KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

@sohkamyung The one I have is based on Android 10, so a bit old, but still recent enough to support most current apps.

They did release a system update in...I think November last year, which was kind of a surprise.

I thought the newer models would be further ahead, but apparently they're still using Android 11:

New tech tip on my website!

Readable Email and Web Pages

It's 2024. If you're still designing websites or email like you would design an 8.5x11" promotional hand-out on a sheet of paper, you really haven't been paying attention to how people use the internet over the past decade.

https://hyperborea.org/tech-tips/readable-email/

KelsonV,
@KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

@bhawthorne Good point on reader mode! I'll have to add that to the list!

As for image descriptions, I think it depends on the image's purpose and context.

The situation I was thinking of was a (subscribed) ad from a local pizza place, where you can see from the subject, sender, etc. who it's about and the image is only really an image to get your attention.

When the image itself matters, I agree that it should be described. I should update that point in the article!

KelsonV,
@KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

@bhawthorne In general I've come to the conclusion that picking good alt text is as much an art as a science, and that in most cases you have to balance several competing priorities. Like with a snapshot you might want to briefly describe who's in it, but with an artistic photo you might want to describe the esthetics, and with something that's basically text in an image, you might just want to use the text. But deciding how to prioritize those goals is both individual and situational.

KelsonV,
@KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

@yakkoj Right! I can't believe I left that out! That used to be one of the big things I'd argue for when it came to any kind of formatted email!
