Feeling very grateful that email happened when it did.

We're so centralization-pilled at this point, that users sometimes even see interop as a threat.

This is another reason federated networks tend to centralize over time.

Reliability is a selection pressure. Fitter nodes attract more connections just by virtue of staying alive. Eventually this results in centralized hubs. This is the Fitness Model of scale-free networks https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitness_model_(network_theory)

Decentralized networks tend to centralize toward power law distributions, for reasons of reliability, efficiency, resilience. This is inevitable.

So the relevant question is: how do you design your protocol to preserve user freedom even under power law distributions?
