Part 2 of my recent visit with some wonderful New College pals.

Gosh, I love these people.

If you want to see what it looked like before I trimmed my beard, here's me recently talking to some dear pals about New College for an hour.

I love those people and that place so fucking much.

It was my first, too!

To give credit, I first heard of New College kennings from Tony Bolante. Odin only knows where he got the idea, but it fits.

@hotdogsladies A cornucopia of Jens.

I do remember another Grant showing up maybe my fourth year - Boat Grant from Key West, maybe?

Around 2012 I met a Grant B in Palm Court, but that was more replacement theory than anything.

It was long enough that this is part one of two. A beautiful ramble.

Gave myself a weird home haircut.

I was kinda thinking George Hurley and was ready to settle for Mike Patton but in the end I landed in an unanticipated third location.

I feel that I should state for the record that I might have introduced you to Syd Barrett, but you introduced me to Billy Bragg.

More importantly, is there anywhere “Power of Attorney” is online? Financially astute cats are a perennial topic.

That CGP Grey brain-split video is very evocative of the Time-Life book on The Mind that shaped so much of my childhood (spreads on optical illusions, LSD self portraits, all kinds of oddness).

I loved that one book enough to eventually buy a copy, which I still have.

The Kurzgesacht crossfade at the end is brilliant, though. And vice versa.

This reminds me of one time I freaked Nick Harkaway out by arguing against the existence of a unitary self. I think that might have started with this brain hemisphere stuff, but got into the idea that brains are electric and have a Hertz. So they're sort of flickering, too, if you slow down your frame of reference. On and off.

Somebody has a bit on artists who create because they're addicted to the smell of turpentine. Was it Doctor Who? Was it Hemingway?
Somebody riffing on one of those Fauve-adjacent painters, I think.

It's all our chemicals, man....

Answering a question:

Do you think the end of the Fairness Doctrine played any part at all [in the rise of disinformation.]

I think the repeal of the fairness doctrine was part of the move toward partisan media (Reagan removed it and then right wing radio took off) so it's easy to think one caused the other and that restoring the Fairness Doctrine would help.

I don't think the Fairness Doctrine would solve the problems we have.

I don't think removing it caused the problems . . .

@Teri_Kanefield
A couple years back, someone on Twitter thought I was arguing that the Fairness Doctrine repeal led to partisan media/disinfo... when what I was trying to argue was that they both emerged from the same social current (which I still think is true).

I remember finding Barry Goldwater's presence all over the stuff....

What if Elon Musk, the planetary migrant, isn’t destroying Twitter at the behest of the Russians or the Saudis or his own inner insufficiencies… but he and Jack are just running an experiment on how a large-scale community migrated from one platform to another?
What if Elon Musk is using Twitter as a model for an uninhabitable Earth … just to get the social data?

grantimatter,
@grantimatter@mstdn.social avatar

@evacide I don't know you, and I'm really only replying here because my wife coincidentally just showed me her (much younger) tattoo artist's pole-dancing Insta pics with a kind of "holy crap, she can do that?" vibe, but...

You're keeping up physically with a 20-year-old pole dancer, you must be doing something right. Either that or harvesting the blood of those who walk alone at night. (Hoping for the former.)

grantimatter,
@grantimatter@mstdn.social avatar

@evacide No, uh, new sensitivities to garlic and/or sunlight? Because 20-year-old me definitely could do more sit-ups in one minute.

grantimatter,
@grantimatter@mstdn.social avatar

@evacide Heh - in another coincidence, I'm in another tab writing an email about a friend/collaborator of mine who did some stuff with Bill Irwin... in the field of theatrical clowning.
20yo me was probably doing clown stuff with this guy six days a week, but should've paid more attention to what was probably happening right overhead. Typical.

Now, the thought of my daughter's laughter were I to even attempt aerial silks with her - it burns! Ssss!

But perhaps there's hope. Thanks for that.

"Let's Stop Calling It 'Content''

I first starting noticing the word "content" in the late 90s

Companies looking to put writing, animation, video or art on their web sites would call it "content"

It flattened innumerable forms of culture into a sort of goo, extruded from a tube

25 years on, the term "content" has metastasized, eating whole the way many people talk about -- think about -- culture.

Let's stop now

My essay: https://clivethompson.medium.com/lets-stop-calling-it-content-8410bf5f94a9

A free link: https://clivethompson.medium.com/lets-stop-calling-it-content-8410bf5f94a9?sk=7a2668c44c31a4359876cfcd25a5f2d0

grantimatter,
@grantimatter@mstdn.social avatar

@kissane @clive @tim

In the magazine world, I also have noticed that the rise of "content" has correlated with a lack of differentiation between pretty different skillsets. Nowadays, I have freelance clients who expect me to be both a photographer and photo editor as well as a reporter, copy editor, and writer.

I think what I'm saying is that the fungibility went way beyond software and into the corporate side of publishing.
