Photo is the full frame, completely unedited, straight out of the camera. (Except for a modest reduction in image dimensions necessary to post to fediscience.)

Vaccination saves lives and money in two ways.

  1. Directly reducing hospitalization and other health care costs in those vaccinated

  2. Reducing transmission and thereby protecting even the unvaccinated.

Free COVID boosters would be an excellent public health investment.

Somewhat more technically, fifteen years ago we wrote about how vaccination generates positive externalities (item 2 above) and thus the private market underallocates relative to socially optimal levels of vaccination.

Probably the biggest news here is the proposal of a new clade "elementaves", species that have diversified to inhabit earth, wind, and water.

Hi @ct_bergstrom, I'd love to know your thoughts on Jonathan Haidt's new book "The Anxious Generation" (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/729231/the-anxious-generation-by-jonathan-haidt/).

It sounds like the "science" behind it is probably bunk (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-00902-2) but the actionable suggestions for parent behavior/regulation seem reasonable to me. Maybe a case of being right if for the wrong reason?

ct_bergstrom,
@ct_bergstrom@fediscience.org avatar

@pollak haven’t read it and not likely to do so I am afraid.

What’s the best word that you have heard many times and could never remember the definition of—until it finally stuck? For me, it’s diegetic.
