You can always tell when I'm stuck on game because I start making a new game.

Stepping into a Whole Foods exclusively for the purpose of buying hot dogs feels kind of subversive.

Chess but on a gigantic board that looks more like a RPG map.

Had diner with a great group of Icelandic game devs. Of course, I forgot to take a picture, so I could be making it all up.

Update on my Slower than Light game: 100 small things can go wrong with the ship and the only way to learn how to fix them is by going though a 500 page manual.

grumpygamer,
@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@kroc That sounds too exciting. I'm going after the complete boredom of being along on a ship heading to starts (very slowly).

grumpygamer,

@ja2ke @bburbank I have that too. It confuses me because there are no rules.

I real want to make my "Slower than Light" game about a journey to our nearest star that takes 16 years in real time. Your job is to keep the ship running. But making that seems too hard so I'm going to go watch TV.

I'm going to scream if I have to watch another talk about interactive story telling and one of the tips is "Create compelling characters". No shit! If that is your problem then you're already doomed. No one assumes that you already know how to tell good stories and gets into the nuts and bolts and structure of interactive stories. I blame GDC and them focusing too much on newbies. GDC is pointless for me because very few talks assume you're already really good and want to be better.

@Danc "specialist design retreats" - I'd love to find some of these.

@mattgodbolt

Hi there Matt, are there any books on compiler building that you recommend? I've been looking at Crafting a Compiler by Fischer et al. and Crafting Interpreters for a small project I'm doing.

@aidenfoxivey @mattgodbolt Highly recommend Crafting Interpreters. I read it after building Dinky and wish I had read it before.
