🇬🇧Former A&E Nurse- currently adjusting (well, trying to…) life outside of emergency and chaos. Wait, this is what the outside looks like?!

A bit sweary. Interests in healthcare (obvs), tech, gaming and climate change. I have a dark sense of humour and don’t take myself too seriously.

I love engaging with all people- every last wonderfully unique one of you :heart_rainbow: (except nazis, you can piss off)

Red

(I have a personal rule of not taking photos of people based on what they're wearing, especially when it's about such a weak premise as matching clothes. But I'm sloooooowly getting better at finding stronger reasons to break this rule)

@lukemgraphy Perfection exception for the rule.

"The fatman still can jump", May 2024

During my long May weekend in Kraków I had a rare occasion to grab a few beers with my remote teammates. We finished the evening early, but two of us decided we're not done and went for a late night walk.

Half an hour before the alcohol prohibition (yup, it's a thing in this one city in Poland!) we bought a few beers and started sipping them illegally in one of the local parks.

And guess what? Well, my teammate had a skateboard. And I had my fastest lens on my camera.

So, what happened next? Well, around 2am somewhere in the center of Kraków one IT nerd started testing his old skateboard skills. The other IT nerd sat on the ground and started stress-testing his Viltrox f/1.4 lens and an ISO setting well above 20k.

My lovely friend successfully landed a few jumps.

I missed a lot of frames because focusing late at night is hard, but a few serviceable frames happened as well.

So yeah. 90% of people will stop to look at my boring touristy snapshots and move on. I'm more excited about this spontaneous drunk session in extreme lighting conditions. 🤷

Fairly momentous day for me today. Feeling pensive and quiet as a result.

Today, I intentionally let my nursing registration lapse. That is, I am now no longer a nurse.

It feels bittersweet. I was ready to let it lapse. I’d had enough. I’ve spent the last 7 years (and 3 years prior gaining my degree in nursing) working as an A&E Nurse (ER nurse to you yanks) and of course the last few years really haven’t been kind. (1/5)

Forgive me here as I’m going to indulge in my past a little- I know it’s a little self fulfilling but I’m coming to realise it all means a lot to me and has shaped me into the person I am now- it feels good to get it off my chest. (2/5)

I’ve witnessed and been involved in so, so much- on both very extreme ends of the spectrum. From harrowing deaths in the worst possible circumstances, to new life in the most unexpected areas. The frail and elderly, to the few minutes old. The laughter, and the heart wrenching sorrow. (3/5)

Been yelled at and hit out at by many loud voices. Been at the very forefront of a worldwide pandemic- staring COVID in the face and saying the words “Not today, fucker” many, many times. Anything to have not made another heart wrenching phone call with bad news again.

As I wonder how to wrap up this rambling monologue, Foo Fighters’ “Stranger Things Have Happened” has just come up on shuffle- couldn’t have said it better myself.

Goodbye, nursing. See you in the next life, maybe. (5/5)

I’ve held people’s hands and kept them comfortable as they passed. Taken pain away from people in the worst moments of their lives. Helped pull people back from the jaws of death. Been a shoulder to cry on god knows many times. Put many plasters on. Made thousands of rubber glove hats to make poorly children laugh. Berated and scolded many doctors. Also learned a lot from and been proud to work alongside many incredible doctors. Been a voice for the voiceless. (4/5)
