thanks for all of the suggestions so far. Of course my use case is very specific so I'll expand further. I've glitched a bunch of .sgi files e.g. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/h8gk37qoxn9mgwh8hecj6/texture_1_glitch_6.sgi?rlkey=x9ttyexui4yinz6u4ndholeh9&dl=0

That file should look like the image below when converted to a png/jpg. However, imagemagick, gmic, and ffmpeg can't open it. can open it in its GUI but opening/saving sometimes takes forever. In theory converting would be quicker in GIMP on the command line as it'd be automatic and I could just leave the computer going for an hour or however long it needs. However, I'm using a beta of 2.99/3.0 and the usual commands (https://superuser.com/a/1558320) don't seem to work.

Soooooo, I either generate some glitched sgi files that can be read by imagemagick, slog it out in GIMP or keep looking for other files that can work with glitched image files, specifically sgi files.

@kandid depends on the process that I'm using. For those sgi images I used some software which can start the glitching process from any byte offset https://www.hellocatfood.com/pure-data-file-killer/ (inspired by http://little-scale.blogspot.com/2013/02/controlle-corruption-mass-jpg-killer.html )

I can't remember exactly which byte offset I used but it's very possible that some of them could have their first 512 bytes glitched

Nice to see someone remember AlgoMech, which turned out to be a series of three festivals.
Really happy with what we managed to achieve with a small arts council grant and other oddments. It was a labour of love though and so there was no point compromising on it during the pandemic.. Until then it was becoming a strange addiction working for many underpaid months of the year on a weekend of fun that as an organiser you couldn't even participate in..

We are dreaming up a @patternclubsheffield festival among other activity to push this kind of stuff further though, maybe next year if we can get some funding together. (we just had our first arts council rejection, but with helpful feedback..)
