Fixed some of the issues with the stencil shadows, so the result now works correctly for both detail rooms and the rest of the room too. So uh, it's mostly done I guess. Some depth issues I still need to resolve, but yeah, getting there.

Started working on implementing stencil shadow volumes in my engine yesterday. It's uh, a tad more complex than I had expected but made some good progress today.

In hindsight, I would've gone with shadow maps instead had I realised how much work this was going to be, especially in relation to how the renderer is structured, but too late now :welp:

Just finished FFXVI and damn, the writing is top tier compared to XV. Not to say it was perfect mind you, just in comparison. That said for anyone else looking to play it, I'd say don't worry too much about the side quests as many of them really detract from the flow and beats of the game.

When Microsoft bought out Zenimax I remember a few folks getting excited that it'd mean Id Tech would get open-sourced again. No surprise that, obviously, that didn't happen. Now with Microsoft grabbing Activision/Blizzard, I'm seeing the same thing?

Unless there's money to be made, Microsoft open sourcing anything is the exception, not the rule. Especially when it comes to games.

Huh, neat. Despite suggestions that Square's Luminous technology is dead, next month, at CEDEC2023, it looks like there will be a tech demo using Luminous.

Someone was asking about the Into the Shadows demo that I'd looked at ages ago, and after poking at it again today, I'd randomly remembered something I don't think I'd mentioned before, but transparent sprites/surfaces in the demo are actually displayed incorrectly (some are totally dark and some are literally half dark).

I deleted every Facebook account a couple of years ago (FB, Insta, WhatsApp) and try never to go backwards, so it’s not like I was going to join Threads anyway.

But the day-one reports of a timeline full of influencer nonsense, Brand™ garbage and harassment are not exactly a compelling ad for the service.

@retrohistories I'm always curious about these things and gave it a look myself, and yeah, my feed was just automatically flooded with "influencers" and brands - I get the impression Meta probably paid a fortune for most of them to be there day one. I noticed quite a few of the so-called "influencers" posting almost exactly the same thing as if from a script, too.

I think I'm good.

Seems that a version of the Reality Engine, which was a competing engine to Unreal Engine 3 (that Epic Games eventually bought out), has been made available here.

I love the story and world in FFXVI, but my god, I don't know if it's just me but the game feels really repetitive. It's not helped by the fact that a lot of the quests break down into; go here, talk to NPC, run over here, talk to other NPC, kill a thing, run back and talk to NPC again. I think the stacking like this is why it's feeling more repetitive than XV was, at least for me - quests sucked in XV but it felt a little better paced...
