Just had the idea to introduce the concept of brushes to my engine, with the ability to save and instance them. Will probably add an ability to have different types, so for now can go with a geometry type and I can just migrate the geometry in the current world I'm using for testing over to that, and then look at adding other types later (perhaps ones that work akin to more traditional brushes).

Not sure why I described it as a "geometry" type, obviously what I mean is a mesh type. I'm tired.

Finally vomited up some thoughts on The Game Awards from the end of last year.
https://www.hogsy.me/2024/01/thoughts-on-game-awards-2023.html

In summary, I think I pretty much felt the same way about it as I've seen many others feel.

You know, my first work experience was for a company that had a load of spreadsheets that needed to be translated in bulk. I worked there for a day throwing together a solution, though was bottlenecked by the fact that the requests to Google to translate were getting rate limited.

Anyway, let's just say the owner of the company chewed me out on the first day for not having a ready-to-go solution for it. And that was that.

Still makes me miserable thinking back on it.

I'm pretty outspoken against AI writing and I think it's lazy as hell to use it to make articles. Other creators reached out recently to note that "SteamDeckGaming" has been using it.

I asked them directly, and they admitted to it.

As an independent creator I think it's incredibly lazy, and ridiculous to try and pass it off as your own work. It's literally crushing the whole idea of any kind of actual journalism to use AI to write the articles.

hogsy,
@hogsy@mastodon.social avatar

@gamingonlinux yeah, I mean, it feels to me like the majority of video game journalism (and a lot of journalism in general) is shit enough without also throwing AI into the mix. It's like a race to mediocrity.

If you're still using Twitter, which I know some unfortunates are, keep in mind you're using a platform that's now actively and openly being used to distribute child porn, and seems to have absolutely zero interest in doing anything about it. If that's still not enough to stop you using it, well, that's a fucking damn shame.

Curious. I noticed in Ghosthunter on the PS2 (using PCSX2) that if I set 16:9 in the settings of the game and then load a save, or start a new game, it seems to reset back to 4:3.

Tried a few different things, such as choosing 60hz rather than progressive, but didn't make a difference. Wonder if it's a legitimate bug, or the emulator is fucking something up somehow. Will try on real hardware shortly.

hogsy,
@hogsy@mastodon.social avatar

Seeing the exact same on real hardware too. Mind you, only tried with progressive, but still weird. The menu seems to initially respect the setting, but as soon as it goes into the game, the aspect appears to reset. Not seen this mentioned anywhere else.

hogsy,
@hogsy@mastodon.social avatar

Okay, it looks like this might be an issue specific to the PAL version. In the NTSC version of the game, there's actually an option provided in the in-game menu to change the aspect there rather than having to do it via the main menu, and that seems to set it correctly.

hogsy,
@hogsy@mastodon.social avatar

The NTSC version seems to have a few additional improvements over the original PAL release, too. Though for some reason the default brightness is much higher, which washes out a lot of details. Seems a good idea to put that down to the lowest possible value to match the PAL version, which I'd wager was the original intended look the game was going for.

tldr; if you want to play this game, go with the NTSC version.

Just implemented experimental package support for Haven Call of the King. The only thing that's missing is handling multi-level directories because I couldn't for the life of me deduce how it's determining that, but otherwise, works fine.

Not going to waste any more time on it.

The R* source code leak has been quite interesting to me from a historical perspective, from seeing left-overs from back when the engine was still called AGE and being developed by Angel Studios. Not going to show anything specific for obvious reasons, but there's documentation on the 'AGE Physics Library' and 'testmesh.cpp' (old code with a reference to Oni 2 content).

The state of journalism these days.
https://gamerant.com/insomniac-leak-suggests-ratchet-and-clank-rift-apart-was-a-financial-flop/

The leaked documents have dates associated with them. So when they made the original report here, they were looking at what other people were saying, and using that as a source, rather than looking at the documents themselves.

I appreciate they didn't want to risk getting illegally obtained material, but I feel like if you're not willing to properly research something, you probably shouldn't publish "news" about it at all.

hogsy,
@hogsy@mastodon.social avatar

A similar thing happened with the Ubisoft leak before, where journalists were reporting that the source code had been leaked for Watch Dogs. What the hackers released did not contain source code, but rather an internal development build of Watch Dogs Legion with tools.

There's nothing I love more than people asking me for knowledge, and then finding out things themselves and refusing to document it.

Not going to name names, but this is why I'm not responding to requests any more.

This is the first screen of the English demo for Ghostbusters: the Adventure Game. Apparently an Italian team is asking for money (!) on KS for this crude AGS point and click title.
Not only the project doesn't have the rights (obviously) but also clearly doesn't have someone who speaks decent English and can help them.

hogsy,
@hogsy@mastodon.social avatar

@damianogerli was just eyeing the Kickstarter page after seeing your post, as I wasn't aware of this before. So many red flags that I don't even know where to begin with it. Bewildering to me that over 100 people backed it already.

I've heard there are issues with the mastodon.social instance? I'm not really in the loop as I'm sort of in my own bubble and keeping away from drama, but does anyone know if it's worth considering migrating myself over to a different instance? And if so, what would be recommended?
