U.S.: Responding to the “gunshot detection” tool ShotSpotter, a Chicago police officer opened fire on an unarmed teenager (www.eff.org)

Three officers approached the boy’s house, with one asking “What you doing bro, you good?” They heard a loud bang, later determined to be fireworks, and shot at the child. Fortunately, no physical injuries were recorded. In initial reports, police falsely claimed that they fired at a “man” who had fired on officers....

How do Americans still allow guns to be so easily available?

Isn’t it well past the point where incidents involving guns should almost never happen?

Can nothing be done to stop it?

Could you recommend a good free DNS one for Android? Or maybe a one time pay option?

Thank you kindly!

What lunches do you eat on a weekly basis?

I’m looking for easy and cheap options for lunches on weekdays. I mostly eat deli sandwiches and hot dogs right now and I always feel like shit after eating them. I think I need something healthier but I don’t have time over my lunch hour to cook anything too fancy. What do you all do for reliable healthy easy lunches?

If you’re feeling shit after sandwiches and hot dogs, presumably in bread rolls, you could be gluten intolerant.

Why do people need to use their phone with one hand?

ianovic69,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t know, those things aren’t a problem for me. I can use maps and type one handed if I need to and I use my phone as much as the next guy. I just don’t find I really need to very often, very rarely in fact.

I know my way of doing things isn’t always standard, are there other reasons people have?

ianovic69,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

To me that doesn’t really compute. I like to see a lot of information on my screen and my eyes aren’t as young as they were. My hands aren’t small and neither are my pockets, but I use two hands most of the time.

I guess we’re all different and if your phone is too big and it’s getting more difficult to find the small phone you want, then I can certainly understand why it’s a problem for some.

I don’t really like looking at curved screens but I do really like using gestures for navigating. Flat screens aren’t as easy to do that with especially as I like to use a case. Horses for courses, eh?

ianovic69,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah it is subjective but when I see complaints about big phones, or rather the lack of small ones, using it one handed seems to be a regular thing.

I’ve been thinking about this and I used both hands with all my phones back to the old Nokia feature phone days, and the first smart phone I had was less than 3.5 inches.

Despite my fairly large hands that have no problem shifting the phone around in one, I just don’t. And it’s because of accuracy, or lack of it. I can miss my intended target quite easily, even with two hands. The bigger the screen, the less accurate I have to be. That’s a really big thing for me. I even used the Nokias with bigger buttons.

This is starting to make sense! If I had smaller fingers that were also more accurate, I would probably want to use a phone one handed as well.

I think this has explained it for me and I’m glad I asked. Now I can appreciate the perspective of the complaint and that’s something I like, seeing things from a place different to my own.

ianovic69,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

Yes, use my phone one handed. Was that not clear?

ianovic69,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

Yes, with reading glasses and everything bigger!

No feature can balance that huge con.

My requirements out way that con by a large degree. It’s not ideal but there’s no perfect phone.

I’m using gestures too

With a case? I have to use a work phone with a flat screen and a case. I set the gestures the same as my own phone for muscle memory and it’s often annoyingly bad.

These things are all subjective, we just have different needs. As I’ve said elsewhere, I asked the question because I did not know what reasons people had for wanting a small phone. I’ve had plenty of good answers now, including yours, and I’m glad I now have a better understanding of the needs for small phones.

We don’t really have that problem in the UK. Where there are gardens the cats are mostly fine, they are usually neutered and most without owners are often adopted quickly by mad British people.

Those without gardens generally get cats to live indoors from the outset. The outdoor cats do affect bird populations but I would have to look for good evidence it’s to any extremes or even particularly bad. I suspect birds are affected much more by decreasing insect numbers.

They do catch a lot of mice but they don’t seem to be dying out, there’s always more of them. No, the likelihood of our cats dying in the wild is quite low compared to the US and other parts of the world where they aren’t an apex predator. About the worst animal encounter here is the fox and it’s rarely fatal.

They do get hit by vehicles and that’s probably one of the biggest causes but, again, it’s not affecting cat numbers much.

Of course the other reason they don’t come home is that they are stolen. That’s seen a big increase in recent years.

All my evidence is anecdotal and/or pulled out my arse. Any good evidence offered for correction gladly received.

I don’t know that you can equate dog poop with bird kills by cats. One happens all the time as a necessity, but surely cats aren’t out there killing birds all the time. They have other things to chase, they have places to go, things to smell, stuff to eat that’s easier than birds. Then there’s all that sleeping to do, that thing that needs to be knocked off onto the floor, you get the idea.

Poop, cats are doing that everywhere. A lot more than killing birds, I reckon. Like I said, I’m a learner. I love finding out I’m wrong, it means I’m not wrong anymore.

ianovic69,
@ianovic69@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah there’s definitely a disconnect here. It’s obviously much worse in the US and as there’s no scientific evidence to link cats to declining bird numbers in the UK, I didn’t think there would be such a big difference.

I stand corrected on that and thanks for adjusting my knowledge.

I can’t tell you how happy I am that some of the replies here are about electronic music machines.

I’ve found it very difficult to find anything like r/synthesizers and it’s fellow circlejerk in Lemmy. If I’ve missed the obvious, please let me know.

For my show and tell I would bring my little analogue synthesiser and my special echo foot pedal. They are very simple but have unusual attributes that are easily demonstrated.

513/74 this evening. My fttp package is 150d but I get the 500 at the 1Gig price.

The install and billing issues after were so bad that i ended up with almost two years of credit. Only started paying in December and they haven’t said or changed anything.

I’m going to see how long it lasts.

It puts a lot of features at the fingertips of the faithful, including the ability to filter whole neighborhoods by religion, ethnicity, “Hispanic country of origin,” “assimilation,” and whether there are children living in the household....

I’ve always really liked turquoise. I wouldn’t wear it but it’s nice to look at.

I usually have a favourite song for a while. How long that’s for is usually quite random before I get into another song. Sometimes it’s an LP. Right now it’s Best of My Love by the Emotions.
