A friend told me reported covid numbers in Norway have been in the 20’s, for the last few weeks. This is a couple orders of magnitude less than NZ.

I’d love our levels in NZ to be this low. Without having much real knowledge of things there, can anyone tell me if the Norway ones accurate or cooked in some manner?

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

@canleaf yup, that’s all very easy to say though. I suspect yes, the numbers are cooked. What I want to know is how they’re cooked or what’s driving the disparity I can see when comparing the two.

e.g in the EU, in Belgium, the waste water tracking seems to be correlating to the case reporting. What I don’t know is, what is excluded from their case counts, and what multiplier to either than or the waste water gives a more accurate view.

@canleaf (Not that I’m assuming you know any more than me, just that this is what I’m hoping someone who does can add to the original post!)

A tip for anyone getting social media fatigue but wanting to stay connected:

You can add people’s public mastodon feeds as RSS feeds to an RSS reader (like, say Net News Wire on iOS/iPad/Mac)

Just put “.rss” on the end of their user profile. e.g this is mine:

https://social.lightbeamapps.com/@dave.rss

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

You can also add hashtags in the say way, e.g by adding this:

e.g: BloomScrolling could be followed on Mastodon.social like so:

http://mastodon.social/tags/BloomScrolling.rss

People who get Seasonal Affective Disorder, are SAD lamps worth it, and if so, where’s best to get one from in Aotearoa please?

I finally realised the reason I spend so much time in the conservatory is because of the light. Cant believe I was so slow to figure it out 😂🤦

I would like to have a few strong words with whoever thought this headline was okay.
“Mortgage strain is a bit like COVID…” yeah, that’s doubtful, mate.
Unless of course what they mean is, we should ignore it, pretend it’s not happening and mock anyone who still takes it seriously?

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

@t_l_wood “it wasn’t anyone’s fault”

No. If you’re constantly going around unmasked all the time, aren’t staying home when sick, and generally cosplaying 2019 - it is very much your fault as the next variant careens around the world.

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

@t_l_wood @v_for_verbosity absolutely possible it was meant that way, but really why say it at all in that case? Incredibly clumsy.

Those who want to ignore their responsibility in all this will have definitely read it the way I’d interpreted though - “totally unavoidable!”

@Jyoti yeah, you don’t have to justify yourself either. Even if you were making a one sided point with the original post, it’s still a valid point in itself!

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the #web, what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

@molly0xfff

  • I miss a feeling of freedom, relative to what we have had since Facebook came on the scene in 2006 which has felt like enclosure

  • I somehow miss the days of when I was on dial up in 1998 and chatting to folks online. I was labelled a geek by other kids in my college for being "good at computers". It feels like those kids are the ones who leave comments under YouTube videos

  • I miss when FOSS felt like it was building something new, instead of just being co-opted by big corps

Everyday I check the news and ask myself something akin to “are we out of the bad timeline yet?” and everyday the answer is “No”.

It’s been like this for years now, you’d think I’d learn my lesson

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

@TonyVladusich you mean the others are worse ? 😅

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

@TonyVladusich

Yeah. This morning it was a case of:

  • How the fuck is Trump even able to argue as president he has immunity from criminal prosecution?

  • More climate change impacts

  • Bird flu is escalating

  • A 14yo killed by a guy with sword in London

… Fucksake 😂

If people are no longer responding to the existing pandemic, how on earth are they going to respond to a new one?

Folk are totally going to freak out about poultry, milk and beef products with H5N1 instead of taking measures against an airborne virus, aren’t they?

One of the saddest things about leaving Singapore for the U.S. is, not only does McDonalds suck they also don’t have curry sauce. Which makes it impossible for me to eat nuggets

I haven’t visited San Francisco properly, but the Star Bucks in the international airport was the worst coffee I’ve ever had.

I wasn’t expecting much, but did expect it to be better than say, Heathrow in London.

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

@skinnylatte yup, in fairness this was travelling back to the UK after nearly 5 weeks travelling around NZ.

Even the most average kiwi coffee from nowheresville NZ, was always going to set a high bar for a chain coffee 😅

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

@skinnylatte @va2lam even by the kiwi turn of that phrase that would still out class most chain coffee overseas 😂

I can feel pretty down about where tech is at, where it's all going in general at times but... This evening I spoke to my brother in Spain via Skype and he was able to wish a happy birthday to his Nephew.

I then had a catch up with folks in the IndieDev iOS Discord myself and @kslazinski admin, with people there in Belgium, France, Norway, Thailand, Australia, and myself here in NZ.

A lot of this is easy to take for granted, to be honest. I appreciate it's possible 🙌

“Quiet quitting” has been creeping back into my timeline in the past few days. I stand by it: it’s the biggest toxic bullshit since the invention of the fruit basket as a “job perk”.

dave,
@dave@social.lightbeamapps.com avatar

@rene yeah it’s just bullshit, IMO. Instead senior leadership should:

  • Pay people fairly

  • Enable jobs that can be done from to be done from home

  • Help people do the work they really enjoy/get the most out of

  • Lead folks with honesty and integrity
