Damn, that was really good. The actor who plays the SCP is creepy as fuck. Looking forward to the rest.

Edit: just saw that episode 2 is already out!

Edit2: My original comment seems to have been lost to the ether (never got federated), so I am reposting it. Might as well add that episode 2 is somewhat underwhelming, but apparently the creator had difficulties in filming and states that he was unsatisfied with this episode, but episodes 3 and 4 will be up to standards.

Lain’s smirk is pretty creepy in this scene. Dad tried to put the lid back on Pandora’s box way too late. At least he tried though.

Wow great find, that site is awesome. It’s clearly a labor of love.

Fyi the music didn’t load for me in Firefox, but it works fine on Chrome.

SHILLING: Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them end up rescuing 80 year old woman also abandoned by Norwegian (www.nbcnews.com)

NBC News writing pure propaganda for Norwegian in this article. Norwegian callously abandoned a sick elderly passenger, and didn’t inform her family she was in a coma on an African island? Thank goodness Norwegian also abandoned those other eight people so she could get some real help....

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

It doesn’t say anything about a coma? It says

She had “medically disembarked” from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

There is no information on her medical condition. If an adult wishes to disembark from the cruise, what do you expect them to do? They can’t legally prevent her from doing so.

And the other people scheduled a private tour unaffiliated with the cruise when they knew they had to be back on the ship by 3pm. They probably figured that the ship would wait for them and inconvenience everybody else if necessary. They got what was coming to them.

Anyone else notice a long delay for comments/posts from lemmy.world?

It might not just be lemmy.world, but several times recently I’ve made posts (usually to !helldivers2.lemmy.ca) that I check throughout the day. Then like 8 hours after I’ve made the post, I’ll see comments appear from people on lemmy.world that are several hours old....

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

This does happen from time to time where the federation queue gets overwhelmed, usually with Lemmy.world for whatever reason. It appears that our outbound federation queue is really backed up right now.

@InEnduringGrowStrong just restarted the service so it may be working better now.

Amazon Ditches 'Just Walk Out' Checkouts at Its Grocery Stores (gizmodo.com)

Amazon is phasing out its checkout-less grocery stores with “Just Walk Out” technology, first reported by The Information Tuesday. The company’s senior vice president of grocery stores says they’re moving away from Just Walk Out, which relied on cameras and sensors to track what people were leaving the store with.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

And I am calling Amazon’s “just walk out” service also a con because it was touted as automatic, even if also being mostly human labour.

That’s not what a con is. A con is a deliberate scam. Amazon’s automated checkout simply didn’t function as effectively as intended. They presumably lost money on the venture because the automation was unreliable. Nothing about this situation was a deliberate attempt to pay over 1,000 employees to check an automated system’s work.

The Mechanical Turk is an interesting story and I’m glad you linked it, but it’s not all that similar.

I remember hearing that Lemmy’s NLnet funding was going to run out soon.

Does this mean the Lemmy devs could potentially reapply for additional funding, or is this only for “new projects”?

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Ok thanks for the info. Fingers crossed 🤞

I wouldn’t say barely usable, but it does have a long way to go before it could be a replacement for discord, that’s true

The internet from 15 years ago is the old internet for anyone under 30.

And anyone over 30 is obviously a Boomer so we can safely disregard their perspective.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

This is the easiest one ever. I thought it was finally my time 😅

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s been a long time since human beings were actually in control of corporations and not the other way around. These multinational behemoths are self-sustaining entities that exist outside of the control of civilized society and subsume the collective efforts of their employees into outcomes that are perverse and unethical, effectively stripping human beings of their agency and ensuring that all economic relationships tilt towards oppression and exploitation. You have my support.

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

My God. That is absolutely vile, on many different levels.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah I noticed that article too. Not quite as vile, to be fair. But any kind of milk contamination is still a nightmare scenario.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

That’s a tough situation. I guess I would just advise trying to find other groups who will accept you for who you are. You’re not alone, but you might have to work much harder to seek out people who are able to understand what you’re going through.

Lemmy is a good substitute sometimes but you really need IRL support as well.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

That makes sense, FB is still fairly popular with younger people in foreign countries I guess.

In the US, pretty much nobody below 40 is going to be actively socializing on FB.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

“Coincidence” would seem to be a much more likely reason

How so? How do you define “coincidence” in this context?

Even if “coincidence” is more likely, that doesn’t rule out the possibility of a higher power.

Atheism is the assertion that there is no God, agnosticism is the acknowledgement that we can’t actually prove such an assertion. As an agnostic, I dont necessarily believe that a higher power is likely to exist, I simply know that I am unable to definitively prove otherwise.

If you claim to be an atheist, you should be able to logically demonstrate that a higher power cannot possibly exist. Go ahead.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Fair enough. I guess my understanding of the terminology may be obsolete.

But I’m unsure how you can be gnostic about the Judeo-Christian God existing. Doesn’t that require the exact same amount of faith as actual Christians, just in the opposite direction? I’m not comfortable with claiming certainty of anything in the absence of any logical framework, and thus I do not identify as an atheist.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

why would it resemble the “God” in the Bible?

Why wouldn’t it? We have no frame of reference to make a value judgment about what a higher power should or would be like. We simply have no way of knowing.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

There’s also no reason to believe it’s the same.

Our extremely advanced collection of scientific knowledge doesn’t even attempt to explain anything prior to the big bang. The models simply don’t apply.

In the 20th century, many made similar arguments regarding quantum mechanics. Einstein famously remarked “God doesn’t play dice”, because he didn’t see how uncertainty could be a fundamental aspect of physics. Everything we knew about physics up until that point involved definitive calculations which provided a determinate result. Turns out he was wrong.

I try to avoid hubris, and in this situation it’s pretty easy for me to recognize and avoid. My question for you is, what is your incentive to make such a definitive claim in the absence of certainty? My suspicion is it has something to do with OPs original claim that atheists choose to believe that God doesn’t exist due to emotional reasons, rather than rational ones.

imaqtpie, (edited )
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

The conventional definition. Any religion that has an institutional existence in society. Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and so on.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

What makes you assume that a higher power would adhere to your moral code?

You don’t actually know, but because certain possibilities make you emotionally uncomfortable, you choose to reject them. It’s totally fine for you to choose to believe whatever you like. But from a purely rational perspective, you cannot prove your assertion; it’s based on faith.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Trump is a human being who physically exists on Earth.

God is an abstract concept that is beyond human comprehension and exists outside the bounds of time and space.

Making claims about something that you fundamentally don’t understand is a fool’s errand.
