What is a system? (socio-technical, societal) How do you define a system?

A system is basically imho a configuration or coordination of activities done by people to each other in a recurring/routinised basis with objects

i.e the things we do everyday repeatedly for each other and with each other and to each other in different settings, with different objects constitutes a system

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

Those activities done on a recurring basis comes to shape our skills, values, beliefs, desires, interests, worldviews, norms, standards, preferences.

Folks who have an affinity for hierarchies need a mechanism of stratification for faux expertise in order to claim superior status

They need to associate intellect & value from benchmarking practices of an exclusive club even if it is ultimately meaningless & nonsensical

Ever feel like exams actually are barriers for slow and deep learning, like it disincentivizes you to study a subject at a pace where you can dive deep into a subject

A pedagogy of tests & exams has no option for folks who are interested intrinsically in a subject rather than the test-taking part

The system does not allow a person to build their competence iteratively and gradually at a slow pace, every stage of evaluation via the tests and exams is not additive but rather punitive.

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

Conveyer belt of tests and grades simply doesn't allow the person to cultivate their interests by deeply exploring a subject which is needed to be able to discover and invent something new.

Inventions happen via having a dialogue with a variety of knowledge by experimenting and challenging concepts from multiple perspectives and lenses

Not by "cracking exams"

Not every novel thing's existence has to be justified through finding inadequacies in entire cannon.

Not every novel method needs to be a natural extension or disapproval of an existing method.

It can begin from an entirely new context, goal or borrow from disciplines that weren't included before.

Stop assuming that anything new can come out only by extending or contesting a cannon.

Is there a Ways of Seeing by John Berger equivalent for graphic design, information design or UI

Is there a site for finding LMIC bilateral trade agreements for discounted equipment procurement from these orgs?

Thermo Fisher Scientific (United States), Shimadzu (Japan), PerkinElmer (United States), Eppendorf (Germany), Agilent (United States)

There is huge dependence of low & middle-income countries on imported high-tech equipment for quality control & regulatory compliance in pharma manufacturing

I was wondering if there are any LMIC countries that have done bilateral trade agreements to get equipment from these orgs at discounted rates

Thermo Fisher Scientific (United States), Shimadzu (Japan), PerkinElmer (United States), Eppendorf (Germany), Avantor (United States), Agilent (United States)

Honestly essentialization/making an ontology of monodimensional & static notions of identity benchmarking every behaviour, intent to a rigid binary of either inside or outside that notion via standpoint episte has been the most dumbest social theory turn ever

Disdain for those seen as less intelligent often leads to belittling behavior, which is a prevalent form of everyday cruelty that I see.

As individuals excel in intellectual pursuits within the realm of knowledge-based professions, there is a tendency to develop a sense of superiority and look down upon those who may not possess the same level of expertise.

They develop an air of arrogance, contempt, lack of patience and respect for individuals who may not think or respond as quickly as others in certain situations.

In some cases, this lack of patience can escalate to disrespectful behavior, such as making fun of others or treating them cruelly.

I think the biggest lesson in life is to learn and relearn kindness, compassion, care and patience even towards the most unremarkable person...especially for those people who have been neglected and shut down by society

I think its important to keep in mind that you have to also learn to increase your capacity to love & care for people with their imperfections, limitations and their inabilities as you develop your expertise and your intellectual prowess.

As a person who skims a lot of academic literature I have never come across anyone who has unpacked complex ideas with so much clarity that you couldn't skip even a word of what they said.

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@RuthMalan Ruth I think you would like this video on semantics, its almost cathartic to listen to because of the clarity with which they have explained semantics.

Every minute of this video is so dense with ideas and yet communicated so fluidly

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

I am in awe of how can a person cultivate such precision in their communication for unpacking complex ideas and yet maintain such fluidity and clarity.

This is some serious craft. Haven't witnessed anyone communicate like this

Like its not quite poetry and its not quite academic essay but just the most well calibrated sweet spot of the two

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@RuthMalan Oh there are so many gems in there

"A good meme is able to anticipate the experiences of its audience well enough to both communicate multifaceted ideas and feelings as well as effectively elicit a desired response, even when the audience doesn't have access to all of the pieces"

I never thought of memes that way but she is absolutely right

Ideal Pedagogy

Encouraging imaginative thinking by replaying and experimenting with the activities that sparked it, then connecting those ideas to related concepts in different disciplines and everyday experiences in order to create a dialogue with students which can lead them to discover the idea behind the concept by themselves.

Think of a canvas, the canvas separated by rows representing instances of search inquiry, along the row itself think of each inquiry at different levels of abstraction

Now you select your level of abstraction for each of your inquiry topic/concept along each of the rows and you basically do a RESEARCH JAM aka try to find conceptually links between ideas of different disciplines at different levels of fidelity
