One of the most troubling wildlife stories coming out of Indonesia right now is the preventable deaths of the Sumatran in Medan Zoo.

I have information on this but don't want to dox anyone, so all I can say is that the tigers could have been saved but doing so was blocked by the city, for whatever political reason.

I don't think there's any valid excuse, this is utterly senseless—tigers caught from the wild and then left to waste in concrete prisons.

I don't want to toot through it, but I have friends (and family) with personal stories that make me queasy. Not fanciful tales, actual lived experience. I've edited a book on resistance and sectarian violence, and a handful of papers on women's rights. I feel the stakes.

This is why history matters. We have excruciatingly short memories.

It took only 26 years to forget the New Order.

For most people, things will be fine. For everyone else, the former voted that it won't be their problem.

Voted in the Indonesian election. 🤠

Actually, I'm surprised that I got to, but I guess it's one of the perks of my new residence status and ID. Indonesia tends to have exceptionally high turnout, but this political season has been full of shenanigans.

I've returned from Jakarta! It's not an appealing city, I'm afraid, and had my wife not told me to go before the election, I may have continued to put it off.

Fortunately, it turned out to be less stressful than expected, thanks to Beatriz and Rossy at the Portuguese embassy. They were delightful and incredibly helpful. 🥰

During my walk from/to the train station, I counted at least 20 cats and met a young women who feeds them. They were just chilling there, unbothered by the traffic. 🥴

Two cats on a pavement. One white one watches another tortoiseshell one eating.
Passing through a station in Jakarta. The foreground is a blurry sign and roof; the background is five tall, white buildings through the open wall.
Two feet on a wooden floor. One has a black sock with grey toe and the other a black sock with grey ankle stripe. I failed to pack matching socks. I sign of good luck?

Additionally, the 14 hours on the train really flew by. The whole trip was extremely exhausting, but I love riding trains, and Indonesia has great ones.

Is offering to add random people as authors on a paper - in order to share and thus reduce publication costs - fraud or a valid response to excessive publication costs and broken performance metrics?

(Not planning to do this myself btw, I'm fortunate enough not to need to, but not everyone is so lucky.)

@jaybaeta@mastodon.social avatar

@NicoleCRust @neuralreckoning @deevybee The reality of those waivers is that (1) a minuscule number of authors from eligible countries are ever accepted, for various (not entirely science-related) reasons; (2) even a 50% discount is impossibly expensive; and (3) they do harm low-income authors in higher income countries. Essentially, they exist because few people are able to take advantage of them.

jaybaeta,

@antoniahamilton What was the journal?

jaybaeta,
@jaybaeta@mastodon.social avatar

@antoniahamilton Oh, that's very fortunate! I've only heard of one author successfully having the APC waived despite not being eligible, but it wasn't a highly ranked one. Maybe it's worth a shot if the research is good enough. 😁

jaybaeta,
@jaybaeta@mastodon.social avatar

@antoniahamilton Yeah, that's a very good point. If time isn't an issue, and you're confident in your work, why not...

jaybaeta,
@jaybaeta@mastodon.social avatar

@neuralreckoning @antoniahamilton @NicoleCRust @deevybee Generally, we've immediately discounted journals with APCs, even if we thought the paper was worthwhile. Time is always a problem and the risk of rejection after a lengthy review too great.

jaybaeta,
@jaybaeta@mastodon.social avatar

@antoniahamilton That's amazingly lucky! 😂

jaybaeta,
@jaybaeta@mastodon.social avatar

@neuralreckoning @antoniahamilton An update on this. We decided to try requesting a waiver from Cambridge Core (for the journal, Oryx), and it was not only granted, but very efficient, taking less than a day to process and occurring before submission.

This is a surprising turn of events, as I never thought I'd be able to submit to Oryx. Thank you Antonia for alerting me to the possibility!

So, anecdotally, it might be easier than anticipated, presuming the waiver rationale is reasonable.

jaybaeta,
@jaybaeta@mastodon.social avatar

@neuralreckoning @antoniahamilton (Although, cynically, my wife proffered that the publisher might be fine with granting the waiver because they don't think the article will be accepted anyway. 🤪 )

    A happy new year to all from Indonesia! I spent the final month of 2023 helping my lovely wife finish her paper, including staying up until 5 am every day since Christmas, so we could submit it before the year was over (my personal goal). I'm starting 2024 exhausted, but I'm excited we got it done!

    Their study was on the distribution of the bear cuscus (photo by her co-author below), a fluffy and hella cute marsupial from Sulawesi. Hopefully, we receive a positive response. 😊
