Gotta say, seeing 60% of you think he would be convicted of both felonies and misdemeanors certainly made me believe more fully that something was going to happen to him! And that turned out to be true!

@glennf it’s called “manifesting,” and I never believed in it until JUST NOW.

This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.

@RickiTarr the Pony Express began after the first commercial Fax line.

Also, Oxford university predates the Aztec empire.

@401matthall oh wait, the line was 1865, the Pony Express was 1861, but the Fax was invented in the 1840s!

Not being sarcastic: I love all the super hopeful people on the fediverse posting about how excited they are to try some new technology, no matter how often they end up hating it and switching back. Keep on trying new things!

At Nancy Fest this weekend, a celebration of the comic strip Nancy’s heyday under Ernie Bushmiller (1905–1982, produced strip 1925–1982), Ernie's late-in-life best friend Jim Carlsson attended and was consulted (sometimes live from stage) for more details about Ernie! A dapper gent whom Ernie and his wife, Abby—who had no children—relied on in their later years, and now an antiques appraiser, he was able to express how much he knew Ernie would have loved it.

@glennf are you a fan of the Olivia Jaimes run? It’s so much better than the Guy Gilchrist strips.

What’s your’s #fediverse? Personally, for me, the one that has stuck with me over the years is…

“Get busy living or get busy dying.”

Spoken by Red in Shawshank Redemption

jemal,
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

@renwillis from William Munny in Unforgiven: “Deserve’s got nothing to do with it.”

It needs the context of the scene, which is why, after wanting a tattoo of it for 20+ years, I still haven’t figured out a design.

jemal,
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

@renwillis Tombstone is much more fun! I was going to explain the context, but it’s basically the climax of the film, so if you ever do see it: that’s the good bit.

@daringfireball @gruber I think the answer to why the 13" M4 iPad Pro is slower than the MacBook Air is that it has two sets of pixels to drive at a higher resolution.

@glennf “ratchet” is a perfectly cromulent word. It’s a slightly dated slang term that people used as a synonym for “ghetto”. 😕

Early in the pandemic, our Subaru’s car stereo system died. I checked all the fuses. They were all OK. I did a lot of research online. It seemed like we need to be replaced. Subaru didn’t have the units AND it was going to be thousands of dollars. We just switched to a Bluetooth speaker.

Today we had our suddenly failed air conditioning system repaired and…The stereo system works again. Apparently a relay in the car that is part of the AC electronics also feeds the stereo system.

jemal,
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

@glennf in the 90s, a buddy wanted to put a fancy head unit into his brand new Jetta, but when he tried he discovered that the car wouldn’t start without the original car stereo. At all.

What’s the best word that you have heard many times and could never remember the definition of—until it finally stuck? For me, it’s diegetic.

@glennf were you hearing it as part of your natural environment?

jemal, to cycling
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

My wife saw somebody asking for help to haul away some trash on NextDoor (IIRC), and noticed that there was a bike in the pic! She wrote to the lady, collected the bike as well as a couple wheels and odds and ends and we took it down to our local charitable bike co-op, Velocipede. If you see mostly working bikes or bike parts, you should do the same!

jemal,
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

@freemo I think they’re common in most cities of a given size. Here in Baltimore we have Velocipede, BBW - a worker-owned bike store collective with two locations, another co-op dedicated to getting bikes to kids in one of the poorer parts of town as well as other regional co-ops to get bikes to refugees, asylum seekers and returning prisoners, etc. and we’re a city of <600K people!

jemal,
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

@freemo in general they also have philosophical and philanthropic goals - giving away bikes, selling bikes at low costs, teaching people to maintain and repai bikes, getting restored bikes to people in need, etc.

I'm updating a "How to edit the Vermont Library Association Website using WordPress" manual. It was created (and last updated, I believe) in 2011.

The links to the WordPress website, while they have not remained the same, seamlessly redirect to appropriate new pages. It's a thing of wonder.

@jessamyn Amazing! When I think back to the websites I was making in 1999, I think I'm glad that they aren't around anymore, as they were definitely uncool.

Does anyone have tips for installing alongside and existing server in 22.04? I am using a bunch of MariaDB exclusive field types and functions for geosearches, but would also like to try out Ghost which requires MySQL.

jemal,
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

@alyx Yeah, for 5.0+ they require it - ghost install won't work without it. 😕

https://forum.ghost.org/t/when-will-mysql-8-be-mandated-which-ver/29228/2

jemal,
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

@alyx That's what I'm considering - I've been burned by Docker so much in local dev that I'm nervous about running it on a server.

jemal,
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

@alyx I think I'm going to try and set it up locally and get that going before taking down a server - if only so i can get a feel for the RAM/CPU usage. But I'll take any tips you've got!

jemal,
@jemal@jemal.contact avatar

@alyx Well, I don't have a preference, but don't go to any trouble! Whichever is easier is probably better at this point! Thanks for all the help!
