Asked on that other website, thought I'd ask on the chicken snack:
When did helicopter parenting kick in? When did kids stop having the ability basically be gone on their bikes all day and maybe call from a payphone/friend's landline to check in once?
Was it the rise of cell phones as something now adolescents or even younger kids just... had? Did it start earlier and I just didn't notice?
It feels like kids/teens haven't had that kind of freedom in a very, very long time. 20 years maybe.
Something that I think will always leave me unsettled about being in Japan: the casual use of foreigner (or in Japanese 外国人, 外国の方) in conversations or in publications in ways in which I consider awkward at best and offensive or insulting more often.
Sometimes it is completely irrelevant, yet said anyway. And other times there are nicer, more informative ways to talk about someone's immigration status when it is relevant.

Especially since sometimes the person actually IS NOT a non-national. I've taught plenty of native Japanese with mixed parentage who looked more like their non-Yamato parent and have had to deal with this repeatedly.

@FlockOfCats they're honestly everywhere, but this is the first one that has made it into the house. Unsurprisingly, it has set up shop in the bath tub area. Probably because I have a lot of plants there and it is very humid. And it has the occasional fly.
My mother lives there still, apartment just down the road a bit. And when we sold the house, the realtor actually asked "wouldn't you want this house, your childhood home, are you sure you want to sell it?"
And I nearly laughed in her face and just said I was 14 when we moved in.
My childhood home is a Pueblo Revival in Las Cruces.
Native Japanese YouTubers who communicate in English and orient (verb intended) their channels towards Anglosphere viewers are worse about leverging "OOH, EXOTIC JAPAN!" than many immigrant YouTubers with the same shtick.
And I'm tired of telling the YT algorithm to stop serving me their trash.
Name me something that is rude, awkward, or discomfiting generally, I can find people doing it in Japan who are ostensibly Yamato descended and holders of Japanese nationality by birth.
Imagine if I did a video called "WHAT AMERICANS HATE THAT FOREIGNERS DO"
Re-watching Star Trek: Enterprise given the references to it in Strange New Worlds and it is honestly better than I remember.
One thing I really like is how arrogant and duplicitous the Vulcans are portrayed. Between TOS and VOY, Vulcans are largely portrayed positively, their claimed enlightenment taken at their word.
Not so in Enterprise. It also explains some of the attitude that Spock faces in TOS, particularly from McCoy.
