Tech history question for the evening: I've been using digital cameras for 25 years....but why didn't anyone develop digital "film" for all the older cameras, a sensor+electronics in a form you could drop into the camera you already had?

Was it too technically difficult or didn't perform well? Insufficiently profitable? It just seems strange that no one was willing to pursue it.

jimbush,

@Joe Sure. But the truly expensive part of "serious" photography isn't the camera body, it's the lenses.

So much great glass was devalued/orphaned by the switch to digital. Why wasn't there a tech disruptor willing to make a play for those who'd rather spend $1,000 on a digital film replacement instead of $1,500 for a new camera body and $5,000-10,000 on new lenses?

Maybe it just wouldn't work. But I'd love to learn why.

jimbush,

@dabblecode That makes sense. It took quite a while for digital to catch up with film in usable resolution.

But I still wish I could drop some "digital film" in an old SLR....

jimbush,

@Anya_Adora @Joe

Right. Memory was quite large in those days.

The only real input you had with film was the ASA/ISO of the film you chose. It's quite a paradigm shift to the types of processing you can do in-body now.

jimbush,

@JohnSullivan @thepoliticalcat Medium format has always been kind of stupidly expensive.

But yeah, as others explained, that is part of the answer. It was too difficult to implement and expensive for the average 35mm user in the 90s, and now things have changed enough that it isn't worth doing.

But I still wish I could drop some digital film in this Spotmatic I just bought.......

How did people procrastinate before social media?

jimbush,

@StefanThinks Magazines and Minesweeper.

jimbush,

@swrogers @StefanThinks Well, yes. But if Usenet wasn't social media, you could at least see it from there.

@Jason844 Can you whistle blow something that everyone knows already?

I have a lot of opinions about a lot of shit, but most of them have already been expressed by people both better informed and wittier than I.

And as an older white guy, I tend to sound like I'm mansplaining even when I don't intend to.

So I'll mainly stick to the puns.

@Diami03 It's real. But I can only find it on Canadian shopping sites!

I only subscribe to Paramount+ because it was all the in 1 place. I’m considering cancelling & just buying all the series. It prices out around $600 on DVD, much more on iTunes. Debating whether it’s foolish to buy DVDs nowadays or whether it’s smart to own the thing I love.

jimbush,

@emilyhegarty @sezduck Whenever some other service licenses a Trek movie, they drop off P+ for the duration. They eventually return, but it's very annoying.
