shit shit shit shit shit. Dealt with my first set of AI-generated-code plagiarism cases this semester.

Dear students: LLMs are terrible plagiarists and they do not give a damn (or have any capacity to care or avoid doing so) if they get you in deep doodoo by reproducing verbatim code from existing repositories on github or from web pages. And on assignments, it's quite likely to happen.

We didn't identify these cases by using an AI detector: They were identical to a source on the web!

@dave_andersen

I wonder how that will affect corporations using AI code generators to boost developer productivity.

@dave_andersen

I have less concern and more curiosity on this. I expect we’ll see a fair amount of patent lawsuits coming forward at some point.

Last night I was talking to my wife and said “I think I’m down to my baseline level of stress.” Her response was that it’s sad I have a baseline level of stress.

Do other people not live with a constant baseline of stress? I thought this was normal.

jimgon,
@jimgon@hulvr.com avatar

@Stacky

I don’t think I have anxiety. It’s just generalized long term stress. And I thought everyone has this.

“WSJ: The AI industry spent 17x more on Nvidia chips than it brought in in revenue”

Linking to a reddit thread just for the headline quote they found in a paywalled WSJ article feels a bit weird but…

This 17x number is just for chips so the actual cost x revenue multiplier is much higher in reality https://old.reddit.com/r/MachineLearning/comments/1bs1ebl/wsj_the_ai_industry_spent_17x_more_on_nvidia/

jimgon,
@jimgon@hulvr.com avatar

@baldur

There’s a rush in corporations to embed AI in everything. I wonder what happens when the AI companies start trying to raise prices. They are going to wait until it’s incredibly costly to remove these things. It’s going to be an interesting day when companies have to pay the full cost or yank all the integration. Just need to float it for a couple more years. It’s never going to get cheaper.

jimgon,
@jimgon@hulvr.com avatar

@toriver @baldur

$30 a month per user is cheap. And remember executives have been sold on unrealistic productivity improvement. $30 a month for the equivalent of 1/2 FTE?

But the current license cost seems like a loss leader. And if that is true, then the actual cost is going to be coming through after industry capture is complete. Or the whole scam collapses destroying entire industries in the process.

I am reading The Spice Must Flow by Ryan Britt which is a kind of loving fan history of the Dune books and media. In it, I learn Herbert got $2,295 for the serialized first part of the first book published in Analog. That’s like $22k today and wow.

So many fun details about the two attempts to make the book into a film before Lynch’s — and before Star Wars. I only knew about Jodorowsky’s which sounds like it would have gone poorly even if visually amazing.

jimgon,
@jimgon@hulvr.com avatar

@wiredog @r343l

I liked the Lynch Dune too. I didn’t read the book prior to seeing it and eventually read the book years later. I was underwhelmed by the book. I still don’t get the fandom around the book. Reading the book did fill in a lot of gaps from the movie and maybe my appreciation of the Lynch movie is due to nostalgia with a backfill. I’m also a general fan of Lynch story telling and Lynch Dune is a Lynch story.

I’m a total poser. But I was shown how useful they are doing things like pulling out fence posts and large rocks. And I’m sold.

Electric is impractical for us. We would need to upgrade our electrical connection and that’s not happening any time soon. The nearest charging station is a ten minute drive from here too.
