@jimsalter@fosstodon.org

Hi! I'm Jim Salter, aka mercenary_sysadmin, aka "the biggest ZFS stan on the planet."

I am not Jim Salter, the Associated Press reporter based in Missouri. That's a different guy, and he hides from the Internet.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

@JoeRess gee, a whole 114MiB of data.

I suspect Allan or I could find a few nits to pick with the various cache layers. (I suspect you could too, for that matter...)

Hi @25admins I was actively using OpenZFS on Fedora for quite a time and got fed up on how many times it broke due to kernel upgrades, as the project does not intend to keep in full pace with the latest and greatest kernels. I found out zfs-fuse is available in the default Fedora packages and decided to give it a go, however I've read many comments against it, and my first experience with it was kinda mixed. Can you guys comment on the zfs-fuse current status and how confident one can be on it?

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@tuliolazarini @25admins I would not recommend zfs-fuse for production use, full stop.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@tuliolazarini @25admins I do not recommend btrfs as a full replacement for zfs. It's generally okay as a single disk filesystem, but relying on it for much beyond what you'd rely on ext4+lvm for leads to tears imo, ime.

LTS kernels are going to be the way to go, if the filesystem really matters to you.

The really "fun" thing about getting one of your sites false-positive detected as a malware site is that pretty much all of the engines use EACH OTHER as data points, so once one of them flags you, all the others immediately follow suit... but they generally DON'T follow one another in terms of REMOVING false positive detection results.

So if eg Kaspersky sneezes, you have ten or more badly documented and completely different removal request procedures to follow.

@jimsalter I assume you already know this, but the PracticalZFS site is not working. I'm getting "Peer’s Certificate issuer is not recognized." on my end.

I don't think the issue is on my end, but happy to be educated 😀 It started happening for me yesterday and, since you have a day job, I figure you'll get it fixed when you can...

But, just in case you didn't know...

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@Topslakr @tripplehelix https://discourse.practicalzfs.com is the correct URL--technically, there is no bare "practicalzfs.com" site at all at the moment; you just get redirected to discourse if you omit the keyword (and ignore the SSL error).

I intend to set up a broader site with articles and information on the bare practicalszfs.com soonish, it just hasn't happened yet. :)

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@Topslakr @tripplehelix your browser very likely cached the redirect, rather than caching the actual URL. You can go into the history, find any cached visits to either the bare domain or the proper sub and delete those entries.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@Topslakr I'm installing Edge on a system right now to see if I can replicate the Smartscreen issue.

I open the site many times daily on multiple systems, mostly Linux or Android but occasionally Windows. I'm aware of the certificate mismatch issue if someone browses to the bare domain name, but the Smartscreen thing is a new one on me.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@Topslakr I can confirm Smartscreen is throwing a hissyfit right now about literally every page on the domain; I'm guessing this has something to do with one of the recent Discourse updates.

I issued an "I'm the site owner and you're full of shit" feedback response to Microsoft; we'll see where that goes. Sigh.

I WONDERED why traffic had nosedived the last couple of days...

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@Topslakr I opened a support request at OpenDNS for reviewing this also. I suspect that it and SmartScreen share an algorithm that neither wants to talk about, tbh.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@Topslakr also, I really hope you were doing me a solid and clicking the "this site doesn't contain phishing threats" link on that SmartScreen page. :)

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@Topslakr I filed false positive detection reports with several of the engines that randomly decided it was a phishing site. Netcraft was the only one to actually say "you're right, this was a bad flag, our bad" but I'm guessing three or four of them turned me loose, and that was enough for the rest to stop as well.

There's a point in here somewhere about consequences of feeding the output of score-based system A to the input of score-based system B, and B's output into A...

What is instead of Climate Change we started calling it FUCKED UP WEATHER THING?

It's nearly May and it's only a few degrees above freezing in London. This shit ain't normal.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@JoeRess not quite as weird as the couple years in a row of "first frost in April" that we enjoyed here in South Cackalacka.

Sometimes I wonder if conservatives might have been easier to reach if we'd gone with "catastrophic climate disruption" instead of "global warming."

PROBABLY not, but I can dream!

Is it a coincidence that stoners celebrate their boring habit on Hitler's birthday? Almost certainly. It still makes me chuckle though.

Y'all ever get a fractal question? One that seems simple at first glance, but the more you pay attention, the deeper the layers you've got to address actually go?

This morning at Practical ZFS--if you'll pardon a car analogy--essentially, a Proxmox user wanted to know "how can I wash my car?" and I discovered that I first needed to walk them through every stage of Johnny Cash's Cadillac, THEN we could talk about the carwash:

I love BSD in any flavor, but weird to see someone say zfs is developed Linux first. Is this really the case?

https://blocksandfiles.com/2024/04/08/ixsystems-no-one-is-getting-marooned/

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@fmo @webframp I would not agree that there is a "prime platform" for openzfs, from the perspective of the actual developers who work on it. It's a unified codebase.

It might very well be the case that the majority of the devs are themselves primarily using Linux these days, but that does not make openzfs a "Linux first" project.

I think AI music generation has reached a similar level as AI image generation. Behold, "sad girl on piano sings the MIT license" as generated by suno dot ai:

Quick FOSS legal literacy quiz

Imagine the following situation: your project is MIT licensed. Someone takes the whole project and white-labels it (changes the name), then sells it commercially without providing the source code or sharing any of the sales revenue with you. They include "Copyright <your name>" and a copy of the MIT license in the "about" page of the software.

Is this allowed?

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault this is the only one I got wrong. Would you mind expanding on this one, please? I thought that the LGPL was weak enough to accommodate this, by design. Not sure what I missed.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault your answer key said the answer to it was "no," unless that's the bit that I misunderstood?

edit: that is indeed what I got wrong, I mismatched the key. What a relief! 😅

I notoriously disapproved of during Early Access, but fixed every complaint I had--the final release is IMO the best licensed D&D CRPG of all time.

I respect the integrity it took to step away, and I can't wait for their next project.

@JoeRess @paradroyd why--have you already forgotten it was a stupid nickname given to him by Zaphod Beeblebrox, an undeniably stupid politician? 😛

Hmm. Honestly, this just makes me wonder if I should have been imagining Zaphod with burnt orange skin all this time. Stupid politicians, stupid inaccurate nicknames granted by same... it's ringing a bell. Can't quite put my finger on it. I'm sure it'll come to me eventually...
