2.5 Admins 194: Thundering Mastodon

Mastodon’s link previews are causing downtime for web servers without properly configured caching, locking down DNS inside Windows networks, why using write-once backup media is a bad idea, and increasing the performance of a Microsoft SQL Server with SSDs and ZFS.

@jaibreadcat @25admins a non-technical person who wants a garden blog isn't going to host it on a VPS. They'd host it on something like WordPress.com. Your example isn't a very good one.

Installing Windows on the MacBook Air so that it’s hopefully no longer a $1000+ paper weight and maybe can be a machine for OBS and other streaming software and maybe Live2D and stuff

JoeRess,
@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

@danirabbit I've found intel Macs generally run Linux pretty well so that might be worth considering (unless you want a Windows installation around).

JoeRess,

@danirabbit ah right.

Whenever I, or someone else, posts a link to this blog on Mastodon, it DDoS's me and brings the site down for a couple minutes.

@kev is your site running WordPress?

JoeRess,
@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev are you doing any caching in Kirby?

JoeRess,

@kev thanks for the info. I'm concerned about my WordPress sites so hopefully this will get sorted soon.

Ubuntu 24.04 is out and we have mixed feelings about it. Plus bad news for RISC-V, a new Linux distro might control safety systems in cars, a classic media player is back from the dead, and more. With guest host @jimsalter from @25admins.

@macallik @LateNightLinux that's a very diplomatic way to say it was shit. 😂

Modern life is undeniably far from ideal. But...

Tonight I caught up with a friend in California on the "phone" (voice only via the Internet). He was driving home from work and was connected wirelessly. The latency was pretty bad (maybe just under a second) but it was still great.

For fun I've just done some maths and (I think) if we were somehow (magically) able to shout at each other loud enough, the latency would be around 7 hours (each way).

Maybe modern life isn't all bad? 🤷‍♂️

Just realised, it's been a couple of weeks and I haven't run "Hugo's Random Benchmark" on this M3 MacBook Pro yet!

2.6s - not bad. Can you do better?

@oac @popey @darkling 24.04 makes the speakers sound much better. (because of the 6.8 kernel)

JoeRess,
@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

@oac @popey @darkling well I upgraded and it only booted sometimes and the brightness buttons broke so I'm back on 22.04 so it's not all rosy.

I'm not going to be a reply guy so I'll just say it here. Please don't do that meme where you put a clap emoji between every word in a sentence. It makes it a nightmare for people using a screen reader.

I know I'm not the best when it comes to accessibility but I try my best, and this is an obvious thing you can (not) do to help.

JoeRess,
@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

@linus well this, obviously. But that's arguably subjective.

Is open source PR consultant a thing? I keep watching open source companies fucking shit up and then doing an even worse job of explaining themselves.

I used to wonder if these companies didn't have anyone on staff who was capable of role-playing "assholes on the Internet" but now I'm convinced that they either don't, or those people are just keeping quiet. (I don't blame them).

So maybe this is my sales pitch.

Hire me as a consultant for an obscene amount of money and I'll fix your problems.

JoeRess,
@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

@danirabbit are you fucking kidding me? The very idea of "pay what you CAN" is something I explain to everyone who will listen. You should see their faces at the penny drops. I always give you credit.

Beyond get your releases out earlier with some magic money and time, I have nothing to offer you in terms of consulting. 👍

JoeRess,
@JoeRess@fosstodon.org avatar

@danirabbit the struggle is real. But not at all what I'm talking about. I'm sure a business expert could draw up a plan to make you 10% more revenue but I'm talking more about keeping your community onside after a fuckup (or ideally avoiding it in the first place).
