Hi! I'm Jim Salter, aka mercenary_sysadmin, aka "the biggest ZFS stan on the planet."

I am not Jim Salter, the Associated Press reporter based in Missouri. That's a different guy, and he hides from the Internet.

Quick FOSS legal literacy quiz

Imagine the following situation: your project is MIT licensed. Someone takes the whole project and white-labels it (changes the name), then sells it commercially without providing the source code or sharing any of the sales revenue with you. They include "Copyright <your name>" and a copy of the MIT license in the "about" page of the software.

Is this allowed?

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault this is the only one I got wrong. Would you mind expanding on this one, please? I thought that the LGPL was weak enough to accommodate this, by design. Not sure what I missed.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault your answer key said the answer to it was "no," unless that's the bit that I misunderstood?

edit: that is indeed what I got wrong, I mismatched the key. What a relief! 😅

I notoriously disapproved of during Early Access, but fixed every complaint I had--the final release is IMO the best licensed D&D CRPG of all time.

I respect the integrity it took to step away, and I can't wait for their next project.

@paradroyd @JoeRess Douglas Adams pretty much got us there already 40+ years ago, with Marvin the Paranoid Android

@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@JoeRess @paradroyd why--have you already forgotten it was a stupid nickname given to him by Zaphod Beeblebrox, an undeniably stupid politician? 😛

Hmm. Honestly, this just makes me wonder if I should have been imagining Zaphod with burnt orange skin all this time. Stupid politicians, stupid inaccurate nicknames granted by same... it's ringing a bell. Can't quite put my finger on it. I'm sure it'll come to me eventually...

Can any folks following me chip in on something?

I was having some shower thoughts this morning, and it occurred to me that stimming is likely essentially the same neural impulse as instinctive dancing to music is in neurotypicals.

Like, sure, we have plenty of DELIBERATE dancing in neurotypical society, and it serves any number of purposes, but I'm talking about the automatic, unforced impulse to nod your head, tap your toes, shake your ass to a beat.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

My shower thought is, whether it's an NT dancing to a beat or an ND stimming to an exciting video, in either case, it's essentially a pleasurably overwhelming flood of information.

In either case, we enjoy it more if we engage in repetitive movement while taking in the data.

But I'm not myself, so I'm really wondering if anybody who does experience stimming can chime in about this.

It sometimes baffles me how prominent charming people like SBF manage to con people into buying into the crypto scam, but then I remember that around half of Americans voted for Trump twice. 🤷‍♂️

Windows Server 2022: DISM Error 1168, the key could not be validated, and your attempt to activate using this license has been cancelled

Also Windows Server 2022: yeah you're licensed and activated just fine, why do you ask boss?

jimsalter,

You might be thinking "ah, I see, an error because the server was already activated!"

No, it was not, as you can see from the first screenshot's screengrab of slmgr /DLV--we were absolutely on a 180-day trial eval license, and it absolutely told me it couldn't activate my retail license, then after a reboot, hey, how about that, I was in fact activated on the retail license it had just told me it could not verify and would not activate.

This is a $1000-a-copy OS.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

oh hey, how about that, found the problem.

they for some reason installed Edge IN THE BASE SYSTEM on Administrator's user profile and not system-wide, and that... is enough to b0rk a wide range of things. Including sysprepping the image.

Great.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

I am now downloading and installing Firefox on my $1,000 server OS ahead of time, so that I will be able to then uninstall Edge without fearing that I then have no way to download and install a browser.

Boy, I sure am glad Windows is so "easy and forgiving..."

People are so quick to be like "don't hoard your health potions and scrolls, use them, it's what they're there for!" And yeah, admittedly, I frequently finish an RPG with 100+ unused health potions alone.

HOWEVER.

I am a child of the 80s, goddammit, and I grew up with two different types of RPG: the kind where you could always grind to get more loot, and the kind where there were only so many monsters in each area.

You ever gotten to the end of a game with NO consumables at ALL?

Yeah.

There's certainly more than one reason I strongly prefer free and open source operating systems and other software. But this ONE would frankly be enough, all on its own.

Fun fact: a lot of potential advertisers for LNL podcasts want to blur the lines between advertising and content. For example they only really want to buy an ad if they can also get someone from their company (often the CEO) on the show to do an interview.

We always say no to that because we have a strict separation between ads and content.

The result is that we sell fewer ads than we could, but that's less of an issue than it used to be thanks to all our wonderful patrons. ❤️

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

Hey everybody! PSA:

Both 2.5admins.com and practicalzfs.com are currently offline, due to their entire datacenter also being offline, possibly due to extreme inclement weather.

We have full backups, and are monitoring the situation at the datacenter to determine if/when we give up on them and spin up a new host elsewhere.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

We're back up, everybody--no idea yet what happened at the datacenter.

I don't think I realized how easy it was to block entire Masto instances as a user--not just as an instance admin--until today. It's literally two clicks and done.

So there's DEFINITELY no need for anyone to lose their mind over commercial ventures offering Fediverse integration. If or or whatever shows up in your timeline and you don't like it, just find any post from any user on that platform, click the hamburger menu, and click block domain: DONE.

@JoeRess they're giving you the option both to read the article without giving them any money AND to support them without ads. Literally what the fuck more do you want? What do you think they should be doing instead?

Where would we be without our own supporters?

This is an absolutely awful take.

Oh god bitcoin is at its highest level for over a year and a half. The major media outlets are going to start convincing more normal people to prop up the pyramid scheme again, aren't they? 🤦‍♂️

jimsalter,

@JoeRess how many decades did those same commercial entities keep enthusiastically running advertising for RJ Reynolds and Phillip Morris products, and for what grab bag of reasons?

Yes, they're going to keep propping it up.

So I think my partner @owen is experiencing a @signalapp attack... I suspect on the part of the phone manufacturer,

How can I...I don't know, prove this? Fix it?

Here's what I did so far to troubleshoot:

  • @owen received a new phone, a Unihertz Atom L, and switched his Signal over to it. As I try to make a habit of, I called him over to verify our "security number". The check failed. The first sign of trouble.

1/3

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@scott @GossiTheDog @owen @signalapp @JoeRess @pluralistic if you've got the infrastructure to trace network connections, you might also consider slapping the phone on an isolated network and just capturing all the packets it sends.

If you can isolate a spike to somewhere weird every time you try to do the Signal check that happens with THIS phone but not your CONTROL phone...

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@grimmy @scott @GossiTheDog @owen @signalapp @JoeRess @pluralistic the easiest way to manage this if you aren't feeling very technical is generally to grab some old laptop you don't care about the OS on, then install opnSense.

From there, you've got a webGUI to manage things, and you can use the laptop's Wi-Fi as the WAN and its ethernet port as the LAN.

If you've instead got an old desktop PC... same deal, but use a cheap USB wi-fi NIC if the PC doesn't have one already.

jimsalter,
@jimsalter@fosstodon.org avatar

@scott @grimmy @GossiTheDog @owen @signalapp @JoeRess @pluralistic assuming you're following my advice and using opnSense rather than just trying to do tcpdump from the CLI on a random *nix box:
