Two of our city councilors in are pushing a policy change that would demean and target immigrant workers & families instead of addressing root challenges in our city...

This is part of a larger push from political opportunists and MGA Re.publi.cans aligned with hard-right media & influencers... I also know it is bubbling up in many cities/towns, and it needs to be addressed head-on.

When it comes to disinformation, there is one danger that cuts across all others:

Big Tech's social media platforms are failing to protect voters and hold bad actors accountable

As I wrote for last week's ProgressNow NM newsletter:

"Since the 2020 election and January 6 MAGA insurrection, these companies have drastically reduced the teams and tools moderating false election content as well as removing features that amplify accurate, much-needed information."

CW: does not contain hacks, tips, or tricks

There are plenty of metaphors in business – going to battle or teaching, for example – but, for me, the one most aligned with ethical leadership has always been pruning (above ground) and amending (below ground, the soil).

A mistake many managers & founders make early on, and some never move on from, is believing this is about shaping culture for other people...

joecardillo,
@joecardillo@federate.social avatar

My experience working across a stack of startups, a few nonprofits, and a couple of institutions/corporations has been that ethical leadership is mostly about a leader pruning their own behaviors/habits and amending the beliefs, perspectives, and feelings that are mixing and swirling underneath.

joecardillo,
@joecardillo@federate.social avatar

Both of these things require time, practice, and humility because you will not always prune and amend correctly...naturally, people will see those mistakes. And, the more you ignore or try to externalize that balance, the more brittle and foolish you become (no glass houses here, I have done this).

joecardillo,
@joecardillo@federate.social avatar

While it varies, most people tend to index a bit stronger on the pruning because it's easier to see and get external validation or pushback on – amending is harder and requires more listening and more seeing what's there already, adding a bit, removing nonsense or harmful stuff, letting it sink in, and seeing what grows.

joecardillo,
@joecardillo@federate.social avatar

Ultimately, they both have one thing in common: if you don't pay attention and work on them as a leader, they go in bad directions. You start doing things that confuse or harm your team, lean toward the creepy, or become outright bullying, abuse, or violence. This is often accompanied by over-controlling scenarios and only investing in things with an immediate advantage.

joecardillo,
@joecardillo@federate.social avatar

The gardening metaphor is a good one because it also leads to this: you can’t control an ecosystem.

Controlling an ecosystem kills the best, most creative part of it …and it's a mistake that is often made by people who have power and don't really understand the ecosystem that they are a part of. Or, let's be more blunt, they work only for themselves and people who are loyal to them.

I've been reading @404mediaco for a few months and just became an annual subscriber, for a few reasons:

  • Big Tech is good at PR (+tech startups emulate this) so we need independent journalists who understand that technical/social landscape

  • 404 Media is owned by the reporters, and we need more cooperative & collective news publications

  • They are covering things no one else does esp. about the impacts of AI on both our culture and basic safety

I don't often talk about it, but sex ed has profoundly impacted my approach to leadership & workplace culture...

Like many people, I had the kind of awkward high school class taught by someone who mostly addressed anatomy, so it wasn't until I attended classes at a local, woman-owned, sex-positive resource center that I learned intimacy is more about communication.

joecardillo,
@joecardillo@federate.social avatar

I remember the instructor sharing that she did this work because everyone deserves to have an honest, meaningful relationship with themselves and the ability to make their own decisions. It was a simple but powerful statement.

There are more than a few ways that shows up in my work today...

joecardillo,
@joecardillo@federate.social avatar

Enthusiastic Consent – This is a core principle for managing teams in a respectful and effective way. When I'm leading a team, I want people to show up, do their best work, and feel good about it.

There are a lot of dimensions to it, but especially that setting up each conversation, work task, and scenario to be one where people can opt in (rather than being told what to do) creates a workplace where people can be curious and are allowed to make mistakes, adjust, and change the way they work.

joecardillo,
@joecardillo@federate.social avatar

Freedom / Autonomy – Most of us don't like micromanagers, and with good reason. At the most basic level, this is often because we think/work/learn in different ways (a good thing). In contrast, being clear about expectations but encouraging freedom & autonomy in how things get done is something most of us appreciate.

Something I often say is "I don't know what you should do, but if I can be a sounding board for how to go about it, I'm happy to."

Hat tip to Dr. Timnit Gebru and Dr. Émile P. Torres on their paper: https://www.dair-institute.org/tescreal/

Broad, deep, and one of the most important pieces of research completed this decade—an essential read for anyone who seeks to understand not just the underpinnings of AI but also a significant percentage of modern technologies and the people who drive them.

The TESCREAList notion of technology's "purity" and associated eugenics-driven ideas of AI are already impacting the everyday lives of billions
