We have the phrase “reply guy”.

What do you call the corporate/PR style answer, where they don't actually answer the question, and are outwardly positive and welcoming?

@ebel smile guy?

Just blocked the words “fedi” and “fediverse”. Honestly this place is better than the other places but my god it does talk about itself a lot. It’s like watching television about television. Not interesting to me

@tomhannen this is one of those very toots! as is my reply I suppose.

Took H to watch "Back to the Future" at a local cinema this weekend. As we left I had the realisation that it would have been the equivalent of my dad taking me to see "It's a Wonderful Life (1946)" back in 1985.

Doc Brown from Back to the Future suddenly surprised.

Jeff’s cheapest projector and a random off cut makes van life so much betterer.

(Though Mario Party is still wildly unfair)

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@tamonten nice. we're vanlifing in Scotland atm. our van has a tiny built-in dvd player which we've banged our heads on more then we've watched dvds on!

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@tamonten understood! we watch/read stuff on our phones plenty. we just find it hilarious how all it really does is play dvds but is 10x the size of a tablet and with a much worse screen. the place we bought the van pushed it as a valuable feature.

I do now kind of wish we'd brought our steam controllers tho so we could play some tony hawk (though again, my laptop screen is bigger and brighter hah).

A an external popup screen could make you some friends on campsites tho I bet!

@peter @vwbusguy my first too! my dad insisted that any computer we got had a keyboard so we could do something other than play games on it. Worked nicely as I learned to program. Very smart my dad!

I bought a second hand mikrotik LTE router and it's from a Latvian ISP. The default config has it phoning home and explicitly turns off API certificate checking!

It's using the TR069 protocol, which I hadn't heard about before: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:TR069-client

Looks like Hashicorp are already playing dirty against the OpenTofu fork: https://opentofu.org/blog/our-response-to-hashicorps-cease-and-desist

Good to know they're rattled at least. Keep using OpenTofu folks and stop trusting Hashicorp.

I'm not keen on making fun of food that helps people eat fewer animals but, no, it really isn't streaky bacon is it.

So here is a guy cooking a hotdog with a 10kw RF antenna. A bonus is it plays the radio audio as it cooks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgDxXDV4_hc

The antennas near our house are 200kw.

I don't plan on touching them whilst grounded so I'm not too concerned, but I am now wondering if I can just put up an antenna and steal power. Screw solar and wind, our house will be powered by MEDIUM WAVE BABY!

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@MikeHar94962844 they'd have to prove how I cooked all the hot dogs before I ate them though - an impossible task.

Went to the opticians where I happened to meet an old neighbour for the first time. He was there asking about putting olive oil in his ears to cure his dizziness - the optician was doing her best to redirect him to the GP though.

I told him where we lived and the first thing he told me was about the somewhat grizzly death of a previous occupant. Fun times!

Anyway, I need glasses to read the tiny labels on the bottom of routers now but otherwise my eyesight is fine. Officially in my mid-40s.

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

Also, the optician put some chemical in my eyes which makes me look like she beat me up and now I'm crying nuclear waste.

pwaring, to Bread
@pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

People who make their own bread or soup: is it possible to do this without using a lot of salt but still have an acceptable taste? I really like both bread and soup but anything pre-made has huge amounts of salt in (2g for a tin of soup, 0.5-0.8g for every couple of slices of bread or a roll, so a serving of soup + bread is often >50% of the RDA for salt).

#bread #soup

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@pwaring I've been making sourdough loaves and the sourdough adds it's own flavour but it does need salt. 1-2tsp for a ~500g loaf which is easily 12 decent and dense slices. If that helps? It also freezes/defrosts perfectly.

Saw the Brett Domino Trio film at the Hyde Park Picture House tonight - it's very funny. It's like the Weird Al film except really awkward and I suspect mostly true. They did a Q&A after the showing which wasn't supposed to be in character but had enough awkward moments that it was hard to be sure.

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

apparently it's unlikely this film will make it to youtube after being in cinemas, so if you're at all interested then you'll want to see it in the cinema! https://linktr.ee/brettdomino

johnl,

@semanticist agreed. but I can see why it could be perplexing to the reply guys tho. I don't think I care when people give me unsolicited advice, even if it's super patronising. But I'm willing to accept other people don't feel the same way.

But it does seem important how many people feel that way. If 50%, then I think it's obvious you should change your behaviour. If it's 0.005% of people then maybe it's not reasonable to worry much about them.

I assume it's significant enough to try a bit.

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@threedaymonk yeah I'm fairly liberal with the mutes and blocks too.

ironically, the person actually being replied to had a more measured response that I think has been overlooked.

Me, in about January/February each year: "hey, @johnl , let's book a week off work in April for our annual Scottish spring roadtrip. I'll figure out the details later."

Me, in April each year: "oh holy moly, the trip's a week away and I haven't made any plans let alone booked anything. I... better get on that."

I never learn.

Also, guess what I've been doing today.

(But woohooo, Scotland time soon!!)

@louisa_ this time we did at least just find and fix the leak in the campervan roof a full week before we left rather than 1 day after we left!
