SNCF Connect “Train Full”

The train… not even half full 🤦‍♂️

And ok, there are stops between Paris and Nuits-sous-Ravières but normally more get off than get on at Sens, Joigny etc.

And yes I just booked on a later one and took the 13:35 earlier one

Empty seats
Even more empty seats
And yet more empty seats

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@bohwaz Nuits sous Ravières? Really? Or Nuits Saint Georges.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@smveerman Right. Those machines are damned awful. But this is running as a 2 x 6 section Régiolis which is fine actually.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Torskmint I just buy a ticket for the next available one in the app. The whole system is such a pile of steaming 💩 - makes no sense at all.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@EmuAGR it has no seat reservation - this "train full" is based on some system of how many people bought tickets for that train in the app. But often forgets there are fewer people with monthly passes on weekends!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@_Hemmschuh On Fridays - when you also have the Sens commuters - it is a solid indicator of trains that are going to be rather full. But weekends, it makes no sense, ever.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@EmuAGR yes you’ve nailed it. It makes no sense.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@_Hemmschuh they are 6 section Régiolis, usually running in double. Could be worse. But yes, there's a lot more you could do. But BFC, Neugnot and SNCF, it's a pretty pernicious combination.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@_Hemmschuh Right, I am also no fan of Regio2N, but they at least have more seats with a reasonable level of comfort than Régiolis. Neither are pleasant trains though - noisy, poor doors, rather bumpy ride.

Still can't believe how much of a slog it is to leave Brussels by the train to North or East. 10 min to do the 5 km nonstop to Schaerbeek, then acceleration to 200 km/h but slow down to 110 to cross Leuven station.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@DiegoBeghin there's not. There are at least 2, possibly even 3. Why they don't make use of it, 🤷‍♂️ Although the voltage change is complex. And Leuven is 160km/h I think, not 110.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Alon in specific terms, no. In terms of under investment in rail, generally, yes. @DiegoBeghin

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@DiegoBeghin I’ve sped through there. But also sometimes crawled I admit. But seriously how could you have built this out of Brussels any other way? Bear in mind a good 80% of people profiting from that infra are doing Liege - Leuven, Leuven - Bruxelles or Liege - Bruxelles. Comparatively few going internationally.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@DiegoBeghin Not sure, economically, it makes much sense. 3.5 hours Bruxelles - Frankfurt is ok, it's the reliability that's crap.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@DiegoBeghin Except you can't easily mix them. And you have finite resources. Belgium 20 years ago committed to 200km/h Schaerbeek - Leuven, 160km/h through Leuven, 300km/h to Ans, and 250km/h Liege to the border, which is fine. The Aachen part needs serious work, and replacing DB ICE 406 series with something better is urgently overdue. But that Belgian infra is OK.

While walking around the 18ème in Paris this morning… there’s a car someone wiped out in the night. Petrol still dripping, indicators still flashing.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@shalf only one piece of wood broke. Otherwise it survived well 🙂

@_nb @vincevlo I was walking to meet @OlivierRazemon at Marché de la Chapelle.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Schleifleistenbruch @ummels how do we define if it ought to be called Semmering? Old Bergbahn with steep ramps and stone viaducts? Or is there something more specific?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@geeeero @Schleifleistenbruch @ummels there must be something relating to the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the definition. That’d eliminate the Schwarzwaldbahn…

Ok, nice try my clients in Paris. But this isn’t 3D enough to go into my list 🙂

@leonoverweel oh that’s good! Hard to pin down in Google Maps though! 🙂

Not #CrossBorderRail today, but a little trip La Ciotat - Marseille - Arles then back along the ligne de la Côte Bleue https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ligne_de_Miramas_%C3%A0_l'Estaque?wprov=sfti1# €25 for 2 people for all TER trains for a day in Bouches-du-Rhône is pretty good

A TGV passes La Ciotat while awaiting the first TER here

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@bovine3dom I did it. But never got checked, so can’t confirm what is meant to be the rule!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

(And in the coming few weeks as my next big trip starts I’ll be highlighting a bunch of the ace railway people here on Mastodon - it’s a super and eccentric and nerdy community that I appreciate a lot)
