Help me build a playlist.

Listen to "Pink Moon" and think about that old VW commercial. Consider the line from Perks of Being a Wallflower: "And in that moment, I swear we were infinite."

There are some songs that sound like a summer night when anything is possible. Like...

Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Temple of the Dog - All Night Thing
Jackson Browne - These Days
Van Morrison - Into the Mystic

What have you got for me?

I just ate a granola bar that listed "Raisin Juice Concentrate" as an ingredient. Now, I'm not a smart man, but...

This means they dehydrated some grapes, reconstituted them (?), juiced them, and then reduced the liquid to concentrate it?

That can't be real, right?

josh,
@josh@cunnin.me avatar

@jake4480 I guess I never thought about it. Suppose it's kind of the same with prune juice, right?

Inspiration for previous post:

Bad Religion's 2nd album "Into the Unknown."

Now, I'm not a huge BR fan, I like 'em, maybe have owned an album or two. But setting aside who they are... This is a GOOD album.

It's after 10pm here on a Saturday night, and my music-finding post is finally done and posted! ⚡

I know we all find music in different ways, and I wanted to write a bit on it. These are my methods and tools. Comment away on your own methods and tools-- I'd love to see everyone else's process, too!

Thanks to everyone who inspired this post, including in HUGE part @buffyleigh @starshaped and @Defiance.

Also tagging @HailsandAles @bendaubney @hl @skullvalanche @wendigo @DanielTuttle @BlueGambit86 @cory and I hope that anyone else that reads it and likes it gives me a shout.

@jake4480 Much more structured than my "randomly come across something, mentally note to listen later, forget for 3 years, then just as randomly come cross it again."

It was a lot easier when I was younger and working in the music section of a Borders. Shelving CDs every day gives you a lot of exposure, even if it's just the visual of seeing something and being drawn in by the cover.

I like to browse new releases at https://www.albumoftheyear.org/releases/this-week/ each week and choose a couple to listen to.

Now, I'm not a SMART man, so if I'm wrong here, please tell me.

Look at the screenshot attached. This is the toggle for audio notifications in the SiriusXM chat widget.

If something says "Mute: On" I expect to not hear anything. The icon even indicates that the speaker is muted. I guess that what's before the colon is the state of Mute if clicked while after the colon is the current state of notifications, but that is not intuitive. Right?

Gonna give you a twofer this morning.

The Clash - Train in Vain
Joe Jackson - Is She Really Going Out With Him?

Back in my early teen years circa 1991, I had a summer job at a campground. Found a tape in the parking lot. Had a bunch of great songs that I didn't know, but these were the ones that really hit. Love that I was able to come to these artists in such a random way. Wish I still had that tape.

@jake4480 Straight up classic album. It took me so long to even figure out who the band was or what the song was called because the tape was loose and there was no internet back then! :D

@jake4480 Last night we were watching some trip planning video and I said something to my daughter about how we didn't have YouTube to show us places to go before our honeymoon. "How old ARE you guys??"

Once, before Eric Cartman took over, Vince Neil was the lead singer for Motley Crue.

Motley Crue - On With the Show

Best Crue song and no one can change my mind. I really wish they would retire for real. They had a good run and cranked out some killer tunes, but it's just pathetic now.

Not even a GUILTY pleasure.

Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe

There's a lot of Bad Things in the world and sometimes its difficult to see the good. Then a perfect piece of pop music comes along and for 3 minutes or so you're reminded that it isn't all bad.

We're going to have some serious pop and hair band moments in the remaining days of this series. I'll be sure to mix them in though.

Poison - Let It Play

I'll be honest with you, Poison was my first favorite band. I thought about adding Fire & Ice, but I was so into this song when Flesh & Blood came out. Play, rewind, stop, play. It's a bit cliché, and not even top-tier Poison, but for a kid in love with music and going into HS, it hit.

Calling an audible this morning.

Green Day - J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)

Also from the Angus soundtrack, not sure how I missed putting this on the playlist. I was playing it on repeat last year for a while. What an incredible tribute to a friend who's gone. If this was the only song you ever wrote, you could live knowing you had done great work.

@jake4480 I would have loved that. We had Placebo open on that tour when I saw them, which...was fine. Just never got into them.

Years later, I was pumped to see Ash on the MTV Area2 tour. Only caught about half a song before their set ended. 😭

TBH, I could (and have) make a playlist of just Weezer songs that I've listened to obsessively.

Weezer - You Gave Your Love to Me Softly

One of the best. The whole Angus soundtrack is good. Remember the days of buying import singles or a whole soundtrack or compilation album just for one b-side or non-album track? Sucks that that is just gone now. What a rush.

Currently avoiding going out and clearing snow from the driveway.

Spacehog - Almond Kisses

Frigging love The Chinese Album. I never got super into Resident Alien, but maybe that's because it didn't have this song. Spacey and sweet. It's so good.

Since I'm just sitting in planes and airports today, an extra song!

Matthew Sweet - Evangeline

Tough call, but I think this has to be my favorite Matthew Sweet song. Got to see him once in a club around...96? Dude is just amazing.

@jake4480 100% was my intro to him. Smog Moon is gorgeous and it's a damn crime that it isn't more known.

Sam Cooke was born today (January 22) in 1931. He wrote so many great songs. I'd hear them on the radio growing up, and I still love hearing them. I was close to posting 'You Send Me' because that's my favorite love song of his, but had to go with Chain Gang, which is of course the catchiest, poppiest song about prison workers you'll ever hear.

@jake4480 He was unreal. One of those that shocks me every time I listen because of how good it is.

Damn. Tried to fit the whole song in one toot, but it was a few characters too long with my hashtag.

Hard Ons - Girl in the Sweater

One verse. One chorus. Repeat 4 times and add a quick solo.

This song just rips. It's frantic, short, sweet, and sticks in your head like honey. Blows my mind that it isn't more known.

Some good, smart pop to start the weekend!

Michael Penn - No Myth

This song would have cone out right around the time I was starting high school. YEARS later, the first line of the chorus got into my head and I had to figure out what the song was. It hasn't left my library since. Long live vaguely literary songwriting!

I missed out on 2 or 3 posts!

Elastica - Stutter

A couple weeks ago there was a "Songs you wish were longer" type post and I couldn't really think of anything, but hell if I couldn't take another minute or two of this one. The verses are already energetic and powerful, but then the chorus just EXPLODES! I do wish we had gotten more than 2 albums from Elastica.

@jake4480 Definitely regret never seeing them. And never getting to 90s Lollapalooza. Sadness.

I had (have) such a crush on Tanya Donelly.

Belly - Feed the Tree

Much like The Flys were peak 1998, Feed the Tree is pretty solidly 1993. Weird lyrics, moody instrumental, swimmy video, and a great hook. I got to see Belly in 1995, bummed I didn't make it to Boston last fall, but hopefully another tour soon. Bonus link to a nice recent interview with Tanya.
