Plans for Tuesday? If not, how about gazing at the Unix epoch time counter starting at 22:13 UTC at it rolls over to 1700000000 seconds?

Because, you see, if the name of the movie I'm adding to Kodi contains the string "trailer" anywhere in the filename, it's not added, but instead lands in /dev/null somewhere.

It's only taken me hours to grasp that.

So, if I take a title such as "The Long, Long Trailer" and turn that into a filename "long-long-trailer.mp4" or whatever, Kodi swallows it. Naming it "long-long-trailr.mp4" works. And let's be honest also sounds way cooler.

JFC. Computers were a mistake!

First time in many years that I've shaved my face, and I didn't even draw blood!

Those of you who know me or have seen pictures know I've had a 1--3mm beard'ish for a long time.

I'm having my throat slit† open in surgery tomorrow morning for a complete removal of the thyroid gland so I thought I'd spare a nurse some trouble and take a stab at cleaning away the hair.

No thoughts and prayers please. I'll report back here if and/or when I survive

One of the features I miss most on this platform is the ability to simply format text. Something like a stripped down version of Markdown: I don't expect links (nor do I think they'd be valuable, maybe too dangerous), but code blocks with non-proportional font would really be something I'd use.

EDIT: ignore this, and thanks to Maxime for putting me right:

cat /dev/zero | :

completes immediately.

(Yschaef also said this, but I didn't get it.)

Holy moly: TIL from @abimelechbeutelbilch that piping to colon ( |: ) in the shell is much faster than writing to the bit bucket ( > /dev/null ). Just tested.

This is in German, but you'll see the commands and times clearly: https://mastodon.social/@abimelechbeutelbilch@fulda.social/112435707590643241

I have a handful of hard disks I'd like to logically "shred". (Not NSA proof, but normal-person proof.).

These are all USB powered (some via a USB to SATA adapter).

What software do I use on Debian with which to do so? Last time I did that was with dd(1), but I'm thinking in 30 years tech might have improved a bit. ;-)

Edit: I also recall having used DBAN once or twice. #historic

Edit2: thanks for suggestions. Booting ShredOS

Is it normal to have to wait five days for a Wise account to be verified? I am in contact with support and they keep saying yeah yeah it’s going to happen, but nothing happens.

Are they legit?

Does anybody know the history behind why Debian's /usr/bin/which is a shell script and Rocky/CentOS/RHEL/Arch/ & likely others have a binary from https://savannah.gnu.org/projects/which/ ?

If you think it's easy to find a list of all German embassies in the world, think again. I'm fascinated by the slides of this talk of @ascherbaum where he shows maps and data on how pathetic the situation is.

Worth a glance.

I've always wanted to ask but have never dared to. Now I'm feeling up to it.

Is there any way to swap / change icons of these output devices on macOS?

The Sennheiser are my headphones and the Soundcore is my speaker, but in the status bar they invariably have the wrong icon.
