New blog post!

This one took weeks to write. It's about me finding a way to significantly reduce the power consumption of a Raspberry Pi Pico W working as a weather station, collecting environmental data.

I am also writing about powering the Pico using solar panels, and this time it's a success, my weather station can now run indefinitely, powered by the sun!

@stfn I've used an external board from Adafruit that turns the Pico on at specified intervals https://www.adafruit.com/product/3435 Every 30 minutes(ish) it checks plant moisture levels and powers down when it's done. It's been running for a year from a half-shaded 1W panel in UK sun

People who mention "successful" people always seem to be thinking about those that are "monetarily successful" but you can have money and still be a failure, and in fact, a terrible person!

In fact, it seems many financially successful people fail at being kind and compassionate people.

@rasterweb When I set up in business by myself a friend said I needed to decide for myself what successful would look like for me, not what successful would look like to others. It took me a good while to absorb that.

@baldur I think experts have always doubted it, but recently we’veheard more from proponents more than we’ve heard from experts. Most people (most of us) are now used to technology following a progressive improvement curve, so the idea that something that seems amazing will never escape a limited domain, and is possibly racing towards a dead end, is hard to fathom.

I wonder how reliable WiFi connections are on the Raspberry Pi Pico W. Could I set two up to talk to each other and it'll just work, even after I ship it to someone across the country? How reliable is it? Will they always see each other properly?

I haven't done much with WiFi stuff on microcontrollers, and... I know it should just work, but the real world is a harsh environment.

@rasterweb My unscientific experience: if it's going to have problems it'll be when connecting on boot, probably something to do with startup sequence. I unplug it and try again and it usually works. Once connected it seems to stay that way. Configured as an access point I couldn't change the default IP from 192.168.0.4, and I don't know how reliable using hostname rather than IP is. They currently all show up as PicoW on my network.
