Can not access the binary factory from @kde. Is it down, or moved somewhere? Wanted to download the Win binary for @kasts.

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@Muemmel @kde Binary factory has been deprecated and shut down a week ago. Win binaries are to be provided by the gitlab CD. However, we're still struggling with getting a fully functional qt6 build.

Should be fine within a short amount of time. Just hang on while the qt6/kf6 dust settles. We'll probably even publish Kasts to the windows store once we have proper builds.

I use Kasts (from ) for podcasts, but I can't change the settings. Clicking the Settings just gives me a blank window.

Anyone got any ideas on what I can do to fix it? Un/reinstalls didn't do anything useful.

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@LexPendragon I would say that you're missing the kirigami-addons library as runtime dependency. Is this a native Linux package or flatpak or ... ?

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@LexPendragon Next best thing is to start from the command line and see which warnings it throws. I'm quite sure qml will be complaining about missing components.

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@LexPendragon Mmm, this looks like a version mismatch of dependencies for this package. It's probably best to contact the packagers to get this resolved.

I would love to see open podcast projects such as @AntennaPod and @kasts integrate with a FOSS, decentralized protocol like ActivityPub for efficient podcast syncing between platforms. Does such a thing exist now?

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@beunice @AntennaPod We're already working on this. Both and are involved in openpodcastapi.org together with other projects like It's still in the process of specification at the moment.

@keunes and @cda gave a lightning talk at about it.

@toran@pkm.social avatar

@kasts is there a way to search for particular episodes, within a podcast?

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@toran Yes, there is: open the respective podcast on the subscription page, and then there should be a search button at the top right (i.e. page header).

Ideally that button should move down to the toolbar below the image in the future. Currently it is a bit of a technical problem because of the toolbar that has to appear/disappear.

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@toran Ah, looking at the screenshot you are still running 23.04 or older. IIRC, search functionality was added in 23.08.

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@toran There are several ways. From simple to complex:

  1. You could save to/from opml from the subscription page overflow menu. This will only handle the subscriptions. It will not save the episode play positions, etc.

  2. Copy your old database to the new install. This will carry over all subscriptions and episode states. See ~/.local/share/KDE/kasts

  3. Use a sync server. First do a forced upload sync on device 1, and then a forced download sync on the 2nd. This also syncs everything.

ecksearoh, to random

for Linux has had some updates since the last time I looked at it. They are now a viable alternative for me over which has been unstable and unusable for the past year. gPodder used to very reliable, but things got so bad that I was seriously looking at as an alternative. Very happy to see that Kasts has stepped up their game.

@ecksearoh Now we're getting curious about which (new?) features made the difference. 😀

i'm going to the end of the fucking world just so i can sync my fucking podcasts to my fucking phone

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@ioletsgo @m has built-in sync support for the gpodder(-nextcloud) protocol. AntennaPod is an android client that supports that protocol as well.

If you don't want to use that, you could in principle sync two instances of Kasts by synchronizing the .local/share/KDE/kasts directory between devices, e.g. with syncthing. That directory contains all of the apps state and downloads.
You could get some conflicts on the DB if you sync while Kasts is running, though.

Fuck it, since I am already at it today here is a especially hot take that applies to mobile Linux environments. I can't fit it all in one post but both Gnome and KDE have a fucking stupid take on theming, if you care just read the message below!

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@Fosstonaut @linmob This is also partly a case of distros not always packaging stuff optimally. Just a few days ago someone opened a bug for Kasts not being able to resume play position while streaming on pmos. Turned out they did not compile it with VLC support. So it will fall back to qtmultimedia which causes a huge amount of issues with playback.

The only reason why VLC isn't a hard dependency is because it's not available when compiling for android.

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@Fosstonaut @linmob The same thing holds for the icons and themes: developers are reluctant to list them as hard dependencies just in case someone would like to use something different. But there is nothing holding back distros to use the proper icons and themes as compile-time or run-time dependencies.

Maybe it's just a matter of opening a bug report or MR to make them aware?

musicmatze, to random

I love already! If my queue is now synced reliably with my instance, I am in absolute love!

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@musicmatze Unfortunately, gpodder sync API does not cover queue syncing. However, together with several other podcast apps (including ) we're working on a new API that will include queue syncing: https://openpodcastapi.org/

Having said that, will already add any episodes to the queue that are "in progress" while syncing.

Kasts 23.08 has been released as part of 23.08.

Kasts is a application that works on desktop and mobile linux, windows and android.

The main new features for this release:

  • capability to mark episodes as favorite;
  • most subscription and episode lists now have the capability to search, filter and sort;
  • downloaded podcast episodes are now stored with human readable filenames;
  • the skip interval (for the forwards and backwards skip buttons) is now customizable.

Screenshot of the Kasts main window in mobile mode. It shows an opened sort menu which allows to sort the podcast subscription list.

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@frumble Unfortunately, there is no proper gpodder API for favorites.

However, together with several other podcast app teams (e.g. we're in the middle of developing a successor to gpodder API: https://openpodcastapi.org/ which should have such extensions to do this properly.

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@rohden Yes, it is known. The current audio backend on android does not have any possibility to keep the pitch constant.

It would require a completely different backend to fix that. So the problem is known, it is on the todo list, but not easy to fix.

gamey, to random

Well, I tried and failed for the second time and once again have no clue how to get / apps to use a dark theme in . I even tried switching theme and color pallet over qt5ct, qt6ct and kvantum but the mobile versions don't seem to react to those apps whatsoever or I did something really wrong (yet I set the env variable correctly). I wish something like PostmarketOS Tweaks had it, as far as I know it's just a different call because there is no proper standard for dark mode yet.

kasts,
@kasts@fosstodon.org avatar

@linmob @gamey If you find out what went wrong and it's something we can have a look at or fix, then please let us know.
