I would love to see open podcast projects such as @AntennaPod and @kasts integrate with a FOSS, decentralized protocol like ActivityPub for efficient podcast syncing between platforms. Does such a thing exist now?

@beunice@c.im avatar

@AntennaPod @kasts Okay, update on this. Turns out that there are two such services that I could find. First is gpodder.net which is a pretty much defunct service that has been unmaintained for years giving 500 internal server errors. The other option is to self-host on a Nextcloud instance which to my mind has a high enough bar to entry that it isn't reasonable as a service for most folks.

Experimenting with HR Diagram formatting. I would love to take these data points and map them to the star's color to create a sort of "rainbow" of stars. The goal being to make a really nice poster worthy HR Diagram but Inkscape doesn't like the large set of paths.

Data from Yale Brightstar Catalogue (Hoffleit et. al., 1991) and the Hipparcos Catalogue (ESA 1997).

You can take this test to see how "Normal" you are, and also how radically left wing you are! LOL Please share the results if you feel like it, or do nothing at all, because it really doesn't matter!

@RickiTarr Here's mine. Completely left but only slightly leaning male on the gender axis. I identify as a man and was assigned male at birth but I do have quite a few interests traditionally associated with women.

So, Flipboard wants to join the Fediverse. I am very curious how this goes as while I am vehemently opposed to federation with Threads as per their incredibly intrusive privacy policies, among a plethora of other things, would it be better if a larger number of unaffiliated companies were to simultaneously join the Fediverse rather than one? The reason I say this is that while I would like for the Fediverse to remain predominantly, or entirely FOSS software run by a large number of smaller servers, if other companies end up joining the Fediverse, it could mitigate some of the embrace, extend, extinguish practices we've seen in the past from the likes of Google and Microsoft. That being said, it is entirely possible, if not likely, that a company like Flipboard would get into bed with Meta and they would work together to push out privacy respecting platforms like Mastodon and Pixelfed and just federate with each other on their invasive advertisement based models.

I used Duck Duck Go for the first time a few years ago and ended up stopping because its results were terrible, but I re-tried it again when news about Google's new trackers broke and it is a million times better - it's very usable now and often provides better search results than Google does. I recommend it.

@beunice@c.im avatar

@enobacon @casseagull @Andres4NY @dx Agreed on all of those points. OSM is fantastic for quick updates and detailed information, I absolutely love it for that. The main issue I see, and trust me, I am super involved with OSM mapping so I don't like that this is the case, but OSM isn't to parity such that it's a drop-in replacement to Google Maps mobile, and the OSM website really needs improved search among other things. You have to type in the exact place name to get a result, which is not going to fly for normal use. It also does not recommend local pharmacies or restaurants like Google Maps does by typing in a generic service word (like Restaurant, store, gas, etc.). It all needs to be a one-stop shop kind of thing too for most folks, so instead of downloading OSMAnd(which I daily) or Organic Maps on mobile and using openstreetmaps.org, you download an official OpenStreetMap app/website for every platform that uses one consistent interface. Long and short of it, I would absolutely love to be able to recommend OSM to most folks, but we still have a ways to go on that front.

Ship's ballast stones from New Orleans. Ships arriving empty offloaded their ballast to take on sugar, molasses, timber, & other goods. The surplus stones were used as cobblestones, bracing for streets crossing ditches, garden ornaments & edging.

beunice,
@beunice@c.im avatar

@servelan @archeaids The whole of south Louisiana sits on a river delta and so before essentially all of the land is exclusively made up of silt, sand, and mud so there aren't really any native rocks to be found this far south. On the origins of the rocks I'm actually curious how one would go about figuring out where the rocks come from.

Montana loses fight against youth climate activists in landmark ruling

Emotional testimony leads to plaintiffs' win in first youth-led climate trial.

beunice,
@beunice@c.im avatar

@arstechnica This a win, and it could hopefully push more youth across the nation to try pushing for more wins more dramatically. Montana has been a very drilling friendly state and to get a legal win like this, particularly in a state like Montana, could see more cases like this to follow in traditionally difficult parts of the country to push climate action.

Mastodon went from 1.2M active users last week to 1.8M active users this week. That's not 70M users overnight, but it's something! 🙂

@Gargron I would much rather this slow, effective growth that is creating a good community rather than a rapid explosion of growth that is resulting in a very asinine feed from what I've heard.
