"file over app" is just as relevant for businesses as it is for individuals โ€” if you don't want your data to be used for training, then take sovereignty of it

Updated AI policy from Slack: You must opt-out if you want to exclude your data from global models

Incredibly confusing language since they also vaguely state that "data will not leak across workspaces" ๐Ÿค”

Use tools that cannot leak data not "will not"

A Pattern Language is one of my favorite books, and this abridged hypertext version by zenodotus280 is incredibly fun to explore with
#obsidian

The book explores humanism in design patterns at every scale from the layout of cities down to how you should choose chairs

zendotus280 did the hard work of linking patterns to each other which makes it possible to easily traverse the text across many more dimensions than you can flipping pages

I think the #Apple ad would work much better if it was reversed. All the objects should be expanding out of the iPad rather than being crushed into it

if you like to write in both directions within the same note, #obsidian 1.6 will provide the smoothest experience I have seen โ€” will be in the next beta soon

Hario V60 ยท coffee maker

acquired 2017-12 ยท $80
cost per use to date: $0.04

my favorite morning ritual ยท beautiful ยท meditative ยท forgiving ยท delicious

I have this olive wood and glass dripper + carafe, but the V60 comes in many variations. The ~$25 all-glass dripper would be the one I recommend if you're making 1-2 cups and want to brew directly into a mug.

@knuku the plastic one is also a good option because it is less likely to shatter, but I am generally avoiding plastics for any items that are in contact with food/drinks, especially hot

LAMY Safari ยท fountain pen

acquired 1993-09 ยท $20
cost per use to date: >$0.001

durable ยท comfortable ยท an iconic ink level indicator ยท inexpensive ยท comes in many colors

My first and last(?) fountain pen. It was given to me by my father and I wrote with it every day for about 15 years โ€” these days I reach for it to write cards or letters.

this is the system I use to I track cost per use for #buywisely posts using #obsidian

I use properties to track the price, purchase date of the product, and estimate the number of uses per month โ€” everything else is formulas, you can see how it works in my vault template

Miele Classic Plus ยท dishwasher

bought: 2019-06
cost per use to date: $2.16

I never thought I could love an appliance this much, an absolute joy to use every time.

Extremely well-considered in all its details ยท a cutlery tray is a zillion times better than a basket.

I have no reason to think this dishwasher won't last at least another 10+ years and reach ~$0.50/use or less. Most of all, this is machine provides such a time savings that the cost is worth the leverage it provides.

Lodge 4.5qt ยท dutch oven

bought 2006-01 ยท $60
cost per use to date: $0.05

incredibly versatile ยท what I would choose if I could only use one cooking vessel for the rest of my life

Le Creuset is another great brand but Lodge is more affordable and seems as durable

Still very WIP, but I am revamping the UI for right-to-left languages such as Arabic, Dhivehi, Hebrew, Farsi, Syriac, Urdu.

So many little questions I had never thought about:

  • Which way does a "back" arrow go?
  • Do progress bars fill right-to-left?
  • Are slashes in paths reversed?
  • Do window buttons get mirrored on major OSes?

This has been an eye-opening experience. Using start/end values rather than left/right is something I will think about with every project going forward.

This humble thermos has now reached a cost of less than $0.01 per day.

I bought it 10 years ago for $32, and use it every day. It still works as well as the day I bought it. The exact model (FBB500SS4) seems to be discontinued but you can still find old stock online.
