Love Obsidian, but for the past 2-3 weeks it would freeze and get slow.
TIL
Themes and plugins must be upgraded separately from core
iCloud appears to not automatically download all files, or quietly reverts some files to cloud only, making indexing and search in obsidian super slow
3.Pages with large markdown table with broken formatting can cause Obsidian to become unresponsive for over a minute each time you try to open that page. Suspect this is a bug?
I didn't used to be a "militant" #FOSS user, but I've been bitten too many times by companies with #proprietarysoftware. For example, #Reason DAW, #Zbrush - both companies that decided to say fuck you to perpetual licenses. Now, I try to avoid any proprietary application. I recently went looking for a good notes app and everyone loves #Obsidian. As soon as I saw it was closed source, I noped out and settled on #Joplin. These companies will eventually fuck over customers so I won't waste my time.
Divers recover chiseled obsidian from Neolithic shipwreck off Italian coast
Divers from the Naples Police underwater unit, based in Naples, Italy, have retrieved a substantial piece of obsidian from the remnants of a Neolithic shipwreck, off the coast of the island of Capri...
I hated the idea of #Dataview at first. I thought it was going to add complexity to my #Obsidian vault. This impression was worsened by the many Youtubers who were showing me their souped up Obsidian systems. Now I'm glad I took the trouble to learn - Dataview can resurface Notes that I've completely forgotten about and automatically list Notes I've made.
I like Dataview now, but I doubt I'll use it beyond ordering my vault from utter chaos to manageable mess. 😆
A Pattern Language is one of my favorite books, and this abridged hypertext version by zenodotus280 is incredibly fun to explore with #obsidian
The book explores humanism in design patterns at every scale from the layout of cities down to how you should choose chairs
zendotus280 did the hard work of linking patterns to each other which makes it possible to easily traverse the text across many more dimensions than you can flipping pages
My new favorite plugin is Modal Form: a form designer for #Obsidian. It makes it much easier to collect metadata to use in documents. It is especiallly powerful when combined with Templater or QuickAdd plugins.
If you want to archive your Mastodon or other app/site feed posts into Obsidian as separate post entries, I wrote a post about how to use the Simple RSS plugin to do that. I cover Mastodon and Grav RSS feeds. I've done the best I can do for now with instructions and a big thank you goes out to simple rss dev Monnier Antoine for being super helpful.
I've been using Spaced Repetition flashcards for years. Over 2 years ago, I transitioned my SRS system to Obsidian with the plugin featured in this video. It's effective, and I enjoy making flashcards within my research notes. #TfT#Obsidian 📚✨
So happy I took the time to learn #Dataview. It's going to be revolutionary for my vault. It'll help me create main topic pages to keep track of my notes. I used to manually link every note to a "MOC" but I kept forgetting and found it tedious. This is going to be a "leave it and let grow" thing, and it suits my #ADHD brain immensely lol.
And how great it is that the #Obsidian anticipated our annoyance with YAML and come up with the properties feature? Genius.
@liztai Your dataviews wil evolve and that might be a challenge when you have dataviews in your templates that you then want to update as well.
My solution to that is to put a #DataviewJS snippet in the template that loads the another note (call it a #Dataview#template where the actual Dataview lives.
@cobweb I am curious too. By default you can set a size like this ![[image.png|pixels]]
Aligning an #image can be done using a #CSS like below and embed it like this ![[image.png#center|300]] but it’s a hassle to edit text along side the image when not in source mode.
I've written a guide for people who want to draft papers in #Obsidian and then export to Microsoft #Word with "live" #Zotero citations. That is, the final document will look like a document that was written in Word with Zotero from the beginning, allowing you to edit the citations and generate a bibliography before submitting to a journal.
Found Tony Romella & feel that he gets me. Even his #Obsidian vault is organised like mine! A totally underrated #PKM Youtuber with an ADHD bent.
ND folks do think very differently. For eg, I just can't do Tiago Forte's PARA system. I have this "out of sight out of mind" thing we #ADHD folks seem to have. If I stash my files in a folder, I forget it even exists. It gets worse if there are subfolders. Like Tony, I have a hybrid system & use notebooks. Coincidence?
It's funny how I wanted #Obsidian be my everything at first. I used it as a task manager, project manager etc. Now I've moved work-related stuff out of my vault. Now use my co's Confluence to store project & meeting notes for my knowledge base, and my tasks in Todoist.
My vault can now focus on what Obsidian does best - a #PKM note taking app for my passions rather than a productivity tool.
i really like #flatnotes, but it's a little bit too minimalistic ... thinking about switching to another #note taking solution ... but there are so many options. #obsidian , #logseq , #joplin ?
main requirements are that its needs to be quick and easy to use; syncing the notes between desktop and android phone (not through external cloud, needs to be #selfhosted) ... preferrably 100% #foss - so i guess obsidian is already out?
I've been trying to think of every mixed RTL/LTR edge case I can, and finally feeling good about it
if you like to write in both directions within the same note, #obsidian 1.6 will provide the smoothest experience I have seen — will be in the next beta soon
