Obsidian is local, offline, and privacy-first, so we won't consider adding AI features until they can fit with the principles in our Manifesto.

In the meantime, there are dozens of awesome plugins that allow you to work with LLMs.

@Rastal I am not aware of them ever saying that. Much of being privacy-first has nothing to do with the code itself, but the policies and practices of the company, e.g. by default Obsidian collects no data and has been independently audited

I wrote a blog post on my move from Evernote to @obsidian as a personal note taking tool and how I implemented a way to share notes between two users that are using the same computer -> https://kristofa.eu/2024-06-01-basic-readonly-sharing-obsidian-notes/

@KristofAdriaenssens @obsidian This is cool!

one small note — Obsidian Sync is now $48 per year (~44 euro)

kepano,
@kepano@mastodon.social avatar

@KristofAdriaenssens @obsidian It would be $8 + $4 per month ($144 per year) because shared vaults are free for the recipient, as long as they have a Sync subscription.

@KristofAdriaenssens @obsidian now that I think about it, it could be $4 + $4 = $96/yr if you don't mind your partner be the owner of the shared vault

1 vault is your personal on your account
1 vault is owned by your partner, and shared to you

somehow we accepted that this is what a room looks like at night

@joshwayne I may have to start doing that too

I noticed that is barely useable with keyboard navigation on iOS/iPadOS. The UI herarchy does not translate into accessible tab navigation. The deepest reachable UI element is the vault switcher menu. There is room for improvement.

@kepano@mastodon.social avatar

@yuliyan will work on it — can you rank your biggest pain points?

kepano,
@kepano@mastodon.social avatar

@yuliyan What I mean is which functionality do you find yourself reaching for the most, that you don't use hotkeys or the command palette for?

Definitely would like to improve support for tab navigation.

Note there are several focus mode plugins. Personally I use the focus mode in Minimal theme which can be activated via hotkey/command.

No-brainer features to add to :

  1. cannot be achieved as a plugin
  2. are useful to at least 80% of people

Modularity is key to keeping the app fast. The 5 plugins you use are not the 5 plugins someone else uses.

5 out of 1,700 plugins = 117 trillion different setups

Hi @kepano, I am at the point of getting the payed Sync but one thing holding me back is whether or not the paths/note names are obfuscated.

Notes that are e.g. named to a person are for example considered to be personal data and I cannot afford them to be breached in case the sync server gets hacked, not to mention other sensitivity that can be in note names.

I searched the pages and using startpage, but can’t find indisputable proof. Can you/anyone help me out on this?

kepano,
@kepano@mastodon.social avatar

@secupriv yes they are E2EE too, you can also verify by following these steps

folks - is there a way to stack 2 plugins vertically in the right sidebar? I'd love to have the calendar stationed in the top right and another just below it.

If you're a student or faculty, there's a 40% discount for Sync — $29 per year instead of $48.

This isn't new but I am realizing that many students don't know about it. You can apply for it in your account settings.

@kg6hxm I'm biased but I have been using it since the launch and it syncs my 14k notes very smoothly and quickly

An exciting new device called Daylight Computer — already compatible with and the new e-ink mode I created for it.
