hmm

kiwa,
@kiwa@bitbang.social avatar

considering this is sony probably requires a center negative cd burner with a weird connector for the usb cable and a rootkit ridden version of SonicStage

kiwa,
@kiwa@bitbang.social avatar

@kiteless it's a custom thing you need a weird burner

Okay. $dayjob has gotten to the point where I need to do something about it.

I'm officially looking for other opportunities in the sysadmin/IT/devops/etc space. I've been a linux/unix sysadmin generalist for ~20 years now and I'd like to apply my considerable skills and experience to the aid of some organization seeking to do good things in the world.

You can find my resume at https://github.com/48kRAM/resume (Yes, my resume has a Makefile)

Open to both remote positions but also to relocation. I enjoy having my hands on hardware and fixing problems. And, of course, I'll bring all the retro gaming nerdery with me.

I'd love to :)

Thanks

@48kRAM hope you find something amazing, good luck!

@kiwa@bitbang.social avatar

hey it's almost 5 pm here, perfect time to remember the aopen motherboard that had a fucking vacuum tube on it lol

kiwa,
@kiwa@bitbang.social avatar

i'm too lazy to read a 2002 review of the motherboard (it's an AOpen AX4B 533 btw) but i think it was just a tube acting as an amp or preamp for the audio, even the bios had an option to enable and disable the tube (that is an option we need to add back)

kiwa,
@kiwa@bitbang.social avatar

@bogdan lol yeah

@spook hah lol

i have a vague memory of a random motherboard i had in the pentium 4 era maybe? it had a talking bios, i remember the "CPU FAN ERROR DETECTED" or something like that on the tiny piezo speaker, i'm like 50% sure it was an hallucination or something

kiwa,
@kiwa@bitbang.social avatar

i remember that board having bulging caps but it still worked great for years lol

kiwa,
@kiwa@bitbang.social avatar

ah yeah it was something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5r88tQPFaY but you could barely understand anything on those crappy piezo speakers some cases had

Traded an old phone i was selling on Facebook for this old spam appliance, i mainly got it for the case and some parts, it has a ton of potential for a nice low power firewall or something like that.

Bulging caps on the motherboard

I was curious and wanted to see if it was easy to boot something else or get into the bios and yeah it's easy, the password is online and you can change some settings, but the disks are always in raid mode, so i tried and changed the bios to another one and it worked.

I'll upload the original bios dump and an HDD image to archive.org because why not.

The bios booting logo it says MSI motherboard v-class with a logo on the center.
