I wrote a post with some mini-reviews of my current favorite PICO-8 games...

Question for other people who deal with Linux servers incidentally:

I have used Ubuntu LTS (the most current version) for the past few years when firing up a server. These servers don't do anything other than run a few docker containers.

I am wondering if Debian might be a better choice.

Thinking that since Debian is slower to adopt the latest and greatest, it might prove to run more stable for a longer lifespan.

Thoughts?

@ktec@mastodon.social avatar

@sergio_101 Been running Debian servers for years. If you install bookworm now, you'll have support 'til 2028.

The key to making your Debian life easier is not to stray too far from the official distro. IOW, minimize the number of extra package repos you add. This makes updates pretty smooth.

Do your major version updates when it's quiet, during the summer when everyone else is on holiday (you weren't expecting to have a holiday, were you? ;-) ), and you won't have to worry too much about LTS.

I've learned to lower my expectations with the Anbernic RG35XX when it comes to playing PICO-8 and TIC-80 games. Lots of them are fine, but some either run super-slow, or get errors when they run.

The ones that do work definitely work well, so I just need to focus on those.

(To be fair I didn't even know about PICO-8 or TIC-80 when I got it, so those are all just bonus games.)

@krystman @rasterweb @a_cup_of_sugar on the and supports both and . You can enable them using the Package Manager app.

Similar to on the , OnionOS uses the fake08 retroarch core for PICO-8. Whilst it is unofficial, and will not have perfect compatibility, it's my preferred way to run PICO-8 because it's Open Source.

Thank you for doing that @rasterweb

My plan is to try those games on the Miyoo Mini Plus (running OnionOS with fake08). Hopefully that will help us to narrow down where the issues lie. Even better if it can result in some good quality bug reports to fake08.

My to-do list is rather full atm, though.

The results of my testing are very similar to yours, @rasterweb

Everything is the same apart from the following:

Pico Monsters worked fine for me.

Gar's Den gave me a blank screen, which required a reset (you didn't mention specifics in your notes)

PICOWARE gives me a black screen after a little while and requires a reset.

ktec,
@ktec@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb @a_cup_of_sugar @krystman @requiem

...

SlipWays: looks as if this wants mouse input. May be addressed in latest releases - https://github.com/jtothebell/fake-08/issues/187

Pictris: I didn't detect any lag

Flappy Wish: error message, 'ERROR! PRESS X TO CLOSE. [STRING "FUNCTION FANCY_TEXT(CONFIG)..."]:41: ATTEMPT TO CONCATENATE FIELD '?' (A NIL VALUE)' - similar to https://github.com/jtothebell/fake-08/issues/195

to be continued...

ktec,
@ktec@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb @a_cup_of_sugar @krystman @requiem

...

Freezing Knights: error message, 'ERROR: PRESS X TO CLOSE. NO LUA TO LOAD. ABORTING CART LOAD.' - cart may be incompatible

Just a reminder, this is from testing on a Miyoo Mini Plus, running OnionOS 4.2 beta. Apart from some audio stutter on a few games, I didn't detect any performance issues. However, I haven't compared the gameplay to other devices.

Some notes about observed patterns:

On start, black screen, requires reset:

  • Apple ][ Bomber
  • Fishy
  • Gar's Den
  • Heliopause

Works for a while, then crashes:

  • PICOWARE
  • Picozone

The question is whether there's any commonality between games that share symptoms.

My final observation is that I had a lot more fun than I expected while doing the testing. There's some great design in these little games.

ktec,
@ktec@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb @a_cup_of_sugar @krystman @requiem I enjoy how over-the-top some of the effects are. I walk into a wall, the whole screen shakes, and it sounds as if the world is about to implode from the impact!

I love playing Pico-8 games in the retro handheld. Today I used splore to find and play online carts :11111:

ktec,
@ktec@mastodon.social avatar

@siquis Is that an RG353V or RG353VS?

Anbernic and similar handhelds really are great for playing Pico-8 and TIC-80. The 3.5" size and 4:3 screen aspect ratio are perfect.

ktec,
@ktec@mastodon.social avatar

@siquis has similar objectives to . The great thing about TIC-80 is that the official version is fully Open Source. As yet, it's not quite as popular as Pico-8.

TIC-80 is supported by both and . You can find games at https://tic80.com/play
