When I was young I rolled my eyes at older people who couldn’t or didn’t want to keep up with tech and all things new. Like why?
I get it now. Between AI stealing all creative work and identities and the continued infrastructure insanities like hyper loops, maglevs, motorways and, um, cars, (not to mention wars, climate and general politics) moving into the woods sounds increasingly attractive.

problems: where should I go 27–31 July with my last remaining days? Trying to avoid any sports events (Olympic, football) and/or huge crowds.
Sound like ?

@partim Oh right. All of core old Europe is annoying now in July and August 😞

@kupfers Hm, going through countries in my head: Switzerland may be in option. You certainly get your money’s worth with Interrail. Jura or western Vallais are quite underrated in my book.

@triple @eWalthert Once something goes wrong you are completely fucked in a system with compulsory reservations, too few trains, very bad timetable, hardly any useful connections but to/through Paris where you have to schlep yourself across town + insane prices (or just fully booked trains). Their app is complete shit, the trains cramped, no storage space, too few doors to board, lame snack options with no seating, too many useless announcements but no useful timely info

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@kupfers @triple @eWalthert Tend to agree – had to fork out like two hundred euros on interrail first class reservations from Girona to Paris, when our normal reservations that Also cost over a hundred were void because of strikes two years ago. Lucky weren’t stuck in Madrid then, where people had to queue for hours. Also the wifi was broken the whole trip, only difference from regular class apparently wider seats.

Sour beer season has officially started – and I need to go to CZ again asap. The Obora supply is dwindling. (Looking forward to to having a wonderful Duna in Latvia next month!)

<insert comment on how dangerous taking Flixbus is compared to a train ride>

murtaugh,
@murtaugh@mastodon.social avatar

@kupfers That explains a small mystery — a few years ago Flixbus seemingly came out of nowhere and bought the largest and most iconic bus line in the US, Greyhound.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@murtaugh Wow! They are the biggest (and only one left) bus company in DE and EU, originally from Munich I think. Buying up smaller operators and establishing the only real intercity bus network we have here. Everything used to be very much rail-based in Germany. Flix also operate some rail routes competing with Germany’s national rail, targeting the low price and comfort points. Bright green, uncomfortable, unavoidable.

Oh god no, Canva bought Serif, the company that makes the apps.
People, go buy it one more time with the forever-license before they make it a subscription. We really just can’t have not shitty things 😭

murtaugh,
@murtaugh@mastodon.social avatar

@kupfers Is it worth buying if I just need an Illustrator -kind-of-thing every once in a while? I've been using Sketch, which I really like, but it’s 100% focused on digital design and I've been kind of making it do print stuff.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@murtaugh That’s how I use it, as the occasional Photoshop replacement and Designer to make SVGs. I think the price it totally worth it for occasional use. The first version got free updates for 5 or 6 years before a major new release was a paid update. Currently 30% off, €126 for three desktop and three iPad apps. Or ~€50 for one.

I’ve been generally very happy with them all; they integrate very nicely. Though I haven’t used Publisher much. And no variable fonts support.

@partim vielleicht?

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon Right. São Bento made it onto the main list and I love Porto. One day I will take on the challenge (never been to Madrid, which may be en-route one way)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@kupfers half of Atocha ought to be on the list (the garden). The rest is concrete hell. And go via Canfranc if you never have been there. Or - slightly easier but slightly less scenic - via Latour de Carol.

Fourth to last train of the day, and the nicest one today – my Interrail pass of summer 23 is coming to an end.
On the traditionally crappy route from Basel to Saarbrücken, it’s the traditional vermicelli pastry, beer and water from Basel SNCF.

With additional tickets and Deutschlandticket, I have been traveling since 22 August. More trips coming up in the next three weeks but then I think I gotta give the Deuter Trail 24 a bit of rest 😑

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@partim Oh yes, I’m with you on the slow and reservation free ones. Except the night trains, I only had to reserve one Frecciarossa (through boring landscape) and pay for one supplement across an alp pass AT–IT. Oh wait one more Italian IC but those are kinda okay. Still trying to avoid any reservations.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@maeow @richardavsmith @kupfers I need something to avoid doing some initial research and quickly decide to screw this and go to Italy again.
