While the rest of Europe is wondering how to sell more international rail tickets, SNCF is doing the opposite from 23 May 🙄

@bilginveperk alerted me

Pretty simple international trips like
Paris - Verviers 🇧🇪
Paris - Rastatt 🇩🇪
can no longer be bought!

Paris - Verviers - 24 May nothing
Paris - Rastatt 22 May gives some options
Paris - Rastatt 24 May suggests I go to Lauterbourg close to the border French side

problems: where should I go 27–31 July with my last remaining days? Trying to avoid any sports events (Olympic, football) and/or huge crowds.
Sound like ?

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@partim I agree! I’m just not sure if I’m ready for the Eurostar hassle (especially on a weekend). And I have to go to the UK in September when tickets were already out of reach when I checked so will probably buy and IR pass again.

I did UK quite intensively the last two years, but only rushed through DK and SE en route to FI. But probably North not so feasible with this few days

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@partim Oh right. All of core old Europe is annoying now in July and August 😞

Portugal! I like!

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@murtaugh Oh I wish! Sorry for the confusion. I was watching the #Eurovision song contest last night and Portugal’s contribution was really nice. I should have used a revealing hashtag. (Will do tomorrow and Saturday :)

kupfers,

@murtaugh But hey wow Brazil! That sounds like a delicious trip

Nichts geht über ein guten Morgen Ihr ICE fällt aus 🤪 So schlecht habe ich noch nie gepackt um überstürzt eine Stunde früher mit Regio aufzubrechen. nach Budapest!

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

Und ja vielleicht geht’s ab Mü im #Railjet besser but I’m somehow not in love with those. Short trains, always full, #diningcar not as good as DB in recent experiences so I was looking forward to breakfast and lunch in an ICE

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@partim Very true 😭 Can’t they have some doppeltr-action there? So much demand

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@eWalthert Ha, definitely not. They are the worst. I take messy DB over SNCF any time and day!

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@triple @eWalthert Once something goes wrong you are completely fucked in a system with compulsory reservations, too few trains, very bad timetable, hardly any useful connections but to/through Paris where you have to schlep yourself across town + insane prices (or just fully booked trains). Their app is complete shit, the trains cramped, no storage space, too few doors to board, lame snack options with no seating, too many useless announcements but no useful timely info

And we are off. Continuing my , now with the wife, for May. Destination is that worst country for Interrail,🇪🇸. Possibly also 🇵🇹, and perhaps ship to 🇮🇪 (and in that case homewards through 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿). Wife didn’t want to take any hiking clothes so I am then only prepared for urban walking and culture, too. (Which kinda makes visiting 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 pointless, sure.)

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@tml @sebwilken Do continue to Northern Ireland in case you want to go via Scotland. Belfast made a real impression on me, very interesting. And the ferry to Cairnryan is nice.

Sour beer season has officially started – and I need to go to CZ again asap. The Obora supply is dwindling. (Looking forward to to having a wonderful Duna #BeerOnTrains in Latvia next month!)

Asking for a friend (no, really!):
How is Affinity Publisher as an alternative if, you know InDesign but signing up for the Full Adobe Experience is excessive? Or how about Scribus?

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@jhilden I think Publisher is great if you don’t yet live and die in one of the other layout apps. I can work in it but it’s hard to break a habit so if I’m in a hurry I end up using the same old app I can handle in my sleep. If you are starting out with typesetting, then I would totally go for it. (From what I heard Scribus is great for academic writing. I don’t know anyone who did proper typesetting, colour specification or PDF export with it.)

@jon@gruene.social avatar

Let me tell you a story about two railways in two large European countries

In one, they’ve just completed the delivery of the biggest new fleet of high speed trains ever, and high speed trains run hourly on pretty much every line. Off peak tickets are cheap, and if you pay for a flexible ticket you can take any train.

In this country regional trains run hourly, are cheap to take (there’s a cheap national monthly pass) and passenger numbers are steadily rising.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@partim @jon @kaat0 Also helps that France is not as densely populated, with major cities who want to be on a high speed line every 20 km. I cannot imagine how to route completely new high speed lines. At the same time, since it’s so (mostly) densely populated high speed isn’t everything. Regular, reliable service to major conglomerates – and working connections – at 150 km would already be amazing.

<insert comment on how dangerous taking Flixbus is compared to a train ride>

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@murtaugh Yeah. Are they also operating in the US? 🙀

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@murtaugh (They had a big accident in Leipzig on a motorway today)

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@murtaugh Wow! They are the biggest (and only one left) bus company in DE and EU, originally from Munich I think. Buying up smaller operators and establishing the only real intercity bus network we have here. Everything used to be very much rail-based in Germany. Flix also operate some rail routes competing with Germany’s national rail, targeting the low price and comfort points. Bright green, uncomfortable, unavoidable.

kupfers, to affinity
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

Oh god no, Canva bought Serif, the company that makes the #Affinity apps.
People, go buy it one more time with the forever-license before they make it a subscription. We really just can’t have not shitty things 😭

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@murtaugh That’s how I use it, as the occasional Photoshop replacement and Designer to make SVGs. I think the price it totally worth it for occasional use. The first version got free updates for 5 or 6 years before a major new release was a paid update. Currently 30% off, €126 for three desktop and three iPad apps. Or ~€50 for one.

I’ve been generally very happy with them all; they integrate very nicely. Though I haven’t used Publisher much. And no variable fonts support.

The 12" G4 MacBook from 2004 was such a neat machine. DVD drive. Wifi and ethernet. You could add memory in a slot at the bottom. Swappable battery.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@pixelambacht @letterror No, different but even more awesome. Especially the 12 inch model. I had that one for a while, too, when I swapped it to my 15 inch G4 Aluminium one with Frank when he went to Type Media.
