lemmefixdat4u,

Can you imagine the response if Congress passed a law that said you must complete “voter training” prior to each election before being allowed to vote? Because we all know that there are lots of voters who know absolutely nothing about the people and issues they are voting on, simply voting as their party wishes. And what if the voter had to pay for that training? Do we set aside the Bill of Rights for the overall good of the country?

I get that there is a big problem with shootings. But these gun control measures do nothing other than make politicians points with their constituents. Live in a state that bans assault weapons and >10 round magazines? Go to a state without those restrictions and buy what you want - if you’re going to commit a crime, why care that you are breaking the law by doing so? Anyone with a little mechanical skill, a hobby lathe, and a 3D printer can manufacture a fully automatic gun. And imagine the carnage if an unbalanced person waited for a windy day, stole a gasoline tanker, fitted it with an electric pump and nozzles, then started a huge wildfire just upwind of a major city. Take away guns and the crazies will turn to other means of carrying our their killing spree.

Want a real solution? That’s going to cost you. Universal mental health care, free education and job training, and programs to find “loners”, who are involved in most mass shootings, then evaluate their risk to the public and themselves.

The Republican stance on abortion would not be so popular among its female supporters if they realize that they could be charged with child endangerment for not getting prenatal care, not eating or sleeping well, or engaging in any risky behaviors - from the moment of conception.

lemmefixdat4u,

We’ve always had bigots. We always will. In the past, bigoted business behavior has resulted in opportunity for those who are willing to serve the clients the bigots won’t. Minorities understand this, and minority-friendly businesses prospered.

I can understand being upset that a business won’t accept you as a customer. What I don’t understand is why anyone would still insist on supporting that offensive business with their patronage. I’d be spreading the word about their practices, asking folks to boycott them.

lemmefixdat4u,

Visio penalizes you for not giving it Internet access by taking extra long to turn on while it vainly tries to phone home. There’s no way to turn off the “feature”.

Why is it not illegal for manufacturers to cripple hardware if you don’t let them invade your privacy?

Are there any alternate firmware sources for TVs that remove the smart features?

lemmefixdat4u,

Auto body workers still need to read. Try mixing Bondo without being able to read measures or weights. How about determining which box contains the proper replacement part?

lemmefixdat4u,

All I can suggest is to read many sources. Keep a mental tally sheet. See which sources correct themselves when they are proven wrong. Note how often they present provably false information. Try to look up the original source material (some will misquote or distort to advance their agenda). Look for widespread corroboration from other sources. After a while you’ll know how each spins their information, how well they vet their material, and their overall journalistic integrity. That will allow you to rank credibility.

Misinformation often has only one source, and that source will usually have a history of misinformation or extreme bias.

lemmefixdat4u,

I use a very small plastic stool I stole from my daughter when her toddler outgrew it. Absolute game changer for washing legs. My wife loves it too for shaving her legs.

lemmefixdat4u,

Has to be my back. It’s hard to reach even with a back brush because of degenerative issues in my shoulder joints. I tried one of those scrubbers with the two ropes, but it’s hard to control. Need a bigger shower so my wife can wash it for me…and get my back while she’s at it!

lemmefixdat4u,

That’s why you get a bidet! With a bit more pressure they work like an enema. Just relax, fill up, purge, repeat. It’s great to combat mild constipation. Prevents butt slime - when you go and the last bit of poop refuses to come out, then slowly leaks out as you walk around.

There are cheap $20 ones that work fine. That area of your body isn’t particularly sensitive to cold water.

lemmefixdat4u,

I wonder if my insurance would pay for at least part of one of these? But I don’t think it would fit in my tiny shower.

lemmefixdat4u,

If you have a balcony or patio area (assuming you are in an apartment), you could opt for a split A/C. These have most of the A/C “guts” in a box that sits outside and a couple of hoses that hook up to the heat exchanger inside. The outside box chills water, pumping it through the inside heat exchanger. They’re more efficient than window A/C units, and get around rental agreements prohibiting window units.

lemmefixdat4u,

In order to do what Starlink does, it would take laying millions of miles of cable or hundreds of thousands of cell towers. People need Internet options with better than a couple of Mb of bandwidth, and without draconian usage caps of a few tens of gigabytes. Without space-based systems, it’s economically unfeasible to service large areas with few customers. What do you think the carbon footprint of laying cable to a few remote islands is? Who is going to pay for that boondoggle? Starlink makes it economically possible.

lemmefixdat4u,

What seems to be impossible is to locate businesses, their employees, and stores geographically close together. I have lots of friends who drive over an hour each way for work. I used to drive 30 minutes to my job. Now my wife and i work from home and for the first time in my life we have only one car. But there’s no way we could go without a car. Family lives 120 miles away. Groceries are 10 miles, and other necessities are 26 miles. The US was laid out to require personal vehicles. It’s too spread out to have a functioning mass transit system that’s convenient to use.

Using the such a system in the US, even if convenient, has risks. During the peak of COVID, many riders refused to wear masks. There’s no security, no hygiene or conduct standards for riders (try to sit next to a crazy homeless person or someone higher than a kite for 45 minutes), and when you try to get help from law enforcement, nobody shows up.

He could have availed himself of his 5th Amendment right. Would have made him look guilty in the public’s eyes, but he would have been no worse off legally. And now that he’s convicted of contempt, Congress could subpoena him again. Rinse and repeat.

lemmefixdat4u,

You’d be charged because you made and distributed a weapon that is an unregistered explosive device - AKA a bomb.

Everyone gets hung up on guns for killing. I’ve shot tens of thousands of rounds and haven’t killed a thing because I shoot competitively. It’s like Zen Buddhists who shoot the bow and arrow, another weapon designed to kill. It is an exercise of mind and body.

I just realized how incredible it is that we don't have toes growing out of our ears.

AFAIK it all boils down to the fact that during embryonal development our cells, which at that point were just a blob of undifferentiated autonomous chemical machines, somehow managed to unanimously agree upon the cardinal directions (up-down, left-right, front-back) for future development - and thanks to this, we don’t have...

lemmefixdat4u,

You know that we’ve gestated various animals in weightless conditions on the ISS, yes? They look normal.

lemmefixdat4u,

Tell me more about this black mold… Unless eating it means I might see God in person.

lemmefixdat4u,

Not only Kentucky. I live in a rural California town of around 2000 people. There are no sidewalks except for the 1/4 mile in front of the elementary school, and that wasn’t built until a kid was hit by a car 6 years ago. Last year a 4th grader was killed by a drunk driver walking home from school on the main road through town - which has no sidewalk. Most of us drive our kids to and from school now, particularly since an attempted abduction happened earlier this year. Bus service is available, but costs $185 a year per child and requires being at the stop an hour before school starts. My daughter won’t let her kids walk the 1/4 mile to the bus stop unattended. Not in these times. I think the bus may become even more unpopular since the special ed driver was arrested last week for molesting kids.

lemmefixdat4u,

Just because it’s unconstitutional doesn’t stop the government from doing whatever it wants to its citizens if someone thinks they can justify/get away with it. Government entities have a long history of doing what they want regardless of what the Constitution says. Sherman’s March to the Sea, the interment of Japanese Americans, nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific Ocean, the Tuskegee Experiment, the MOVE bombing in Philadelphia, etc… The Constitution is just pieces of paper. Its power comes from those willing - and able - to enforce it.

lemmefixdat4u,

One of the concerns about Starlink’s satellite constellation is the ability to locate a single powered cellphone anywhere on the planet, even when you have GPS off. That they already have this ability means cellular trackers also work anywhere on the planet for those who have the right access.

lemmefixdat4u,

The survivors will be those able to adapt. There’s plenty of nourishing fauna, but how many are ready to eat bugs? Rats?

Transgender adults in Florida are blindsided that a new law also limits their access to health care (apnews.com)

The new law that bans gender-affirming care for minors also mandates that adult patients seeking trans health care sign an informed consent form. It also requires a physician to oversee any health care related to transitioning, and for people to see that doctor in person. Those rules have proven particularly onerous because many...

lemmefixdat4u,

Funny how the same people supporting this law oppose universal school breakfast/lunches, subsidized neonatal/child healthcare, and funding for extracurricular programs.

lemmefixdat4u,

I got banned for saying if I saw someone stealing from a store, I’d follow them to their car and cut the valve stems off their tires. Cuz, ya know - vandalizing someone’s car is illegal.

lemmefixdat4u,

I care because every theft means I pay more the next time I shop. When someone steals from a store I patronize, they’re stealing from me. I was commenting on a post about stealing from Home Depot.
