Always learning!... and helping others to do the same. I've done research, written papers, taught maths, physics and science at high school and university... now doing bits and pieces

A tie is one of the most useless items of clothing invented. Sure, it's behind whale-bone corsets and high heels designed to hobble women. But it's not far away.

Glad to be waiting for a train into the city, the platform is fairly full, and not a tie in sight.

I'm surprised any US-ians are happy to use Instagram. I would've thought they'd be using Instapound?

So, I gave two talks yesterday at a Physics Teachers conference (Physcon 2024).

Feeling good because, both, apparently (according to attendees), were useful and interesting.

In particular, I feel I've really honed my Special Relativity spiel on Time Dilation (it's taken a while!) - I should really write something up (as promised in previous paper):

"Event-diagrams as formal, pictorial world-maps were developed by Hughes (to be described in a future publication)."

Then again... 1/2

So, returning to drama (acting etc.) "later in life" (not that late, but late enough) and, unfortunately, I'm at most a double-threat:

Acting, tick... singing, tick... dancing, you what?... why did I sign up for this?

OK... so it's not dancing, dancing, just that stuff you do in a play with songs but, that's difficult enough for me!

I'm just hoping that embracing such a challenge really does stave off dementia etc.... there's got to be some benefit to putting myself through this!!

It's easy to understand why people struggle to apply logic, rationality etc. in discussions, when my (essentially) advanced maths students struggle with learning about various proofs.

Looking to get the metre redefined so the average acceleration due to gravity on Earth is 10 ms^-2 so it's easier for my Year 12 physics students... they find the physics hard enough! 😀

My daughter just cut an avocado in half, poured balsamic vinegar into the little hollow, and ate the avocado by scooping it out with a teaspoon.

Apparently taught to her by my mother-in-law.

In the past, I've sometimes read an author, liked them, and so then read them until I "stopped liking them" (got feed up of the sameness etc.... would often go back later).

It was great going on a holiday (loads of time to "wallow" in the books) and taking three "different" (yes, they are all kind of a sci-fi-ish) books/authors.

I'd recommend all three ("reviewed" below) for very different reasons:

If buying jewellery for a friend who's a werewolf, stick with gold, or go platinum if you want to add a "dash of "silver".

What was your go-to dish as a cash-strapped student?

Mine was:

Pasta and baked beans topped with a fried egg, cheese grated on top, flavoured with black pepper, washed down with orange juice.

My daughter, who "does not like cheescake" requested a Basque cheescake as her birthday cake (my usual choice of cake for my birthday... so proud of her!😀).

Supporting my claim that it's the cheescake for those who don't like cheescake!

Memories of Christmas's Passed.

The Christmas Eve that I got weird looks all day for randomly bursting out laughing every time I remembered the sign in a shop I'd walked past that morning...

They were brazenly advertising:

"Stolen Cake"

In the next US presidential election there's really only one choice to "save" democracy i.e. Biden. BUT, ironically, "only one choice" is not democratic.

US democracy is already dead.

A long-shot would be Democrats winning "landslide" elections on the promise of voting reform i.e. sufficient power to change the electoral landscape to include things like compulsory voting, preferential voting etc. so minor parties become viable, the Democrats own power declines etc.

Unlikely, to say the least.

With the rise of "AI" (LLMs) and google search too often turning up junk, I'm thinking my next career move might be door-to-door sales of the printed edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica - it can also double as a fuel source, toilet paper etc. when the apocalypse arrives.

I've been so enjoying being involved in a local theatre company's (Nuworks) plays.

This morning they were running one for 13-ish year olds about bullying. I was going to drop a daughter off and disappear but I had to stick around (got offered a coffee and good conversation) and so I listened to David's (guy who run's Nuworks) intro for the kids.

He's an incredible person. 1/3

I dislike the term "Followers" and I don't "follow" people... I flag those whose posts I'd like to see because they sometimes/often post things I happen to also find of interest, they're happy to have interesting interactions / conversations etc. And I assume others do the same for me.

I'm not a "follower" and hope no-one is "following" me in the sense that our interests will often diverge, but we'll discuss (when the converge), share different perspectives, disagree etc. etc.

My typing is not as good as I think it is. I'll be merrily tapping away, thinking "OK look at me go!"... loose concentration, then check back in to see that the last few words were:

"Npt qhat I mesbt them to nr!"
