Polaroid film is made of crystals of herapathite. How was herapathite discovered? "Herapathite crystals were first prepared when an assistant to the toxicologist Herapath mixed iodine with the urine of a quinine-fed dog."

Love waking up to find out six hours ago someone edited a toot I’d boosted to say something wildly different and kinda problematic. There should be a limit to how much you can edit toots that have been boosted. Fix a typo? Absolutely. Totally change the content? No

level98,
@level98@mastodon.social avatar

@joannaholman @stib @jedsetter Yes. The default could be that an edited post is Unboosted and Unfavorited until someone clicks they want to keep their boost / favorite. No problem if someone doesn't get around to saying "Yes" I want to keep it.

A few days ago I posted about how, while "debunking" can be nice, just showing how things work can be better. I mentioned showing geology to someone who thinks the earth can't be 4 billion years old. Here is a great video about how exactly we know that that there was once a sea that split North America in two. I love how Dr. Cook is careful to explain not only what he knows but HOW he knows it in a way anyone can follow.

@futurebird Yes. Too often in teaching, especially science, we do not sufficiently explain "how" we know things.

I remember when I was a kid, if someone was in therapy, people talked about it in hushed tones, like it was a shameful secret, and now people talk about it casually in every day conversation. It's good to see that things can change, even if it's just a bit.

level98,
@level98@mastodon.social avatar

@WhiteCatTamer @RickiTarr We probably all need "therapy" to some degree or other,even if that just consists of sharing, with friends. But, like you said, easy to say but can be difficult to do.

Y'all I realized that I have a really bad tendency of not looking people in the face especially strangers, it feels really intimate for some reason, does anyone else do this or have suggestions for being better about it?

level98,
@level98@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Yes. And...

I spent time literally training myself to look people in the eye when talking to them i.e. consciously thought about it. It felt really awkward at first but got less and less so. Sometimes I still internally weird-out a little while doing it, but generally I'm not too bad now.

Though, I still find times I catch myself not doing it.

The problem with food fashions is that really useful ingredients get put aside, left behind, left on the shelf. Remember cream cheese? If you are of a certain age you will recall the cream cheese dips. I had a particularly flavoursome one that involved chilli sauce, a jar of sweet and sour vegetables and loads of coriander leaves. It was quick, easy and magnificent.

But over time, cream cheese has lost its appeal in the food world. It is pretty much ignored in place of feta, ricotta, cream, tahini, avocado and other creamy and fashionable ingredients. In our kitchen, however, cream cheese still has its place on the refrigerator shelf amongst these other beautiful ingredients.

It isn’t a dip today, but the recipe is for a spread that we are making with cream cheese. It is so easy it is hardly a recipe. It is cream cheese mixed with orange juice and pecan nuts. Yum. Add some grated zest as well.

Use the spread on crackers, or on slices of fruit. If you would like to use it as a dip, simply whip it until it becomes lighter.

@LifeTimeCooking Got cream cheese? Make Basque cheesecake!... the cheesecake that people who don't like cheesecake, like (at least, among people I know). 😀
